properties of glass/epoxy composite pipes in seawater

This study explores the effects of seawater ageing on the mechanical and structural characteristics of reinforcing fibres and matrix
resins used in the production of glass/epoxy composite pipes. An
in-depth analysis highlights the complications and drawbacks in the
ageing process of the specimens, showing that longer immersion
times increase the deterioration of the fibre/matrix interface. Finally,
a suitable analysis of the immersion time and ageing temperature
is proposed.

ipelines are commonly used in the oil and gas industry for both
offshore and onshore functions. After several years of operation
in such corrosive environments, steel pipelines may experience
inner and outer metal deficiency due to erosion and corrosion. More
than 70% of the world's oil and gas transport pipelines are over 40 years
old and some of them need to be replaced rapidly to retain their actual
capacity.
Sometimes, these pipelines may undergo a degradation process due to
impact loads caused by pressure fluctuations of the fluid in and out of
the medium.
Ageing could be one of the utmost damage factors when fibre-reinforced pipelines are immersed in seawater. As most of the fibre-reinforced plastic materials used in the facilities are exposed to environmental moisture at unusual temperatures, this attribute of composites
has attracted significant attention.
The water absorption of composites is an extremely complex process
that can be dependent on various factors such as the curing agent and
resin, void proportion, prepreg properties, and fabrication. Water absorption can accelerate the evolution of damage inside composite parts
and cause additional damage.

Introduction
Damage due to water absorption in composite materials occurs in different stages. First, water molecules circulate inside the composite's matrix. Second, the dispersion of water molecules is favoured by the capillarity effect of the fibre/matrix boundary. Third, water accumulates in
the microcracks and voids present in the composite material, thus increasing water absorption. A repaired composite will soak up more water than an undamaged one. The damage, such as interface debonding
and matrix cracks, results from the exposure to a humid environment.
The damage due the ageing process gradually reduces the lifespan of
composite materials. Ageing can be caused by various factors such as
moisture, temperature and UV radiation and can affect ultimate strain,
modulus and strength at high temperatures.
Several researchers conducted tensile tests on GFRP specimens to determine their mechanical properties. In their research on the impact
behaviour and compressive strength of glass/epoxy composite pipes
directly affected by seawater, Mehmet Emin Deniz et al. [1] and his
team determined that the failure mechanism is stronger as the pipe
diameter increases. The impact of water ageing on the mechanical
properties of glass and flax fibre-reinforced composites were studied by
Assarar et al.[2]. Kootsookos et al. [3] examined the effects of seawater
on the strength of carbon fibre-reinforced composites. The researchers
