The next generation
of high-performance rigging
AEROsix is a new disruptive aero rigging system developed for grand
prix racing and high-performance superyachts that combines a solid
carbon plate and multistrand carbon rods.

A

EROsix is a revolutionary product that
is expected to be the next generation of
high-performance rigging, a new concept for strength elements. This aerodynamic
rigging has an elliptical shape, combining
the reliability and strength of multistrand
cables with the performance attributes of solid
carbon, to create the ultimate rigging option
on the market. Thanks to the multistrand
rods, the product is flexible and able to bend
so that the cable presents absolutely no risk of
compression failure. The multistrand rods also
absorb energy during impact so that damage
does not migrate through the whole cable,
while the solid plate provides robustness to
the design in the smallest possible space, as
it reduces the amount of air contained in the
complete bundle of the cable. Consequently,
the cross-section area of the cable decreases.
Another advantage to the rigging is that the
outer shape of the bundle can be changed
by changing the shape of the plate. Due to
its extended ellipse shape, AEROsix has the
highest elliptical performance ratio among all
the carbon rigging products on the market.
This implies a significantly reduced drag coefficient, achieving a highly aerodynamic product. The multistrand carbon rods have also
been proven to have very low vibration and,
in that way, a greater speed can be achieved
with the same power while sailing, yet maintaining safety and robustness. This innovation
involves a new method of organizing the fibres
inside the cable and also a new method for
manufacturing the cross-section in the rigging
industry. Each rod has an influence on the

distribution of tensions in the cable, so it is
necessary to place them strategically following
a rod pattern.
Low weight, smaller diameter
and complex geometry
The main advantage of carbon fibre is the
lightness it brings to the boat. In high-performance boats, this is one of the most critical
aspects and what makes most boatbuilders
opt for carbon fibre rigging. Using composite
materials allows the possibility of aligning
the fibres in the direction of the maximum
stress, reducing the weight and diameter of
the rigging. The use of carbon fibre provides
the ability to mould structures with complex
geometries. With the carbon fibre preimpregnated with resin, a solid plate is obtained that
gives rigidity to the cable and the size of the
cable is reduced thanks to the compaction of
the fibres. Furthermore, the composite carbon
produces filaments in the form of rods, which
give the rigging a high resistance to impact,
multi-strength and extreme flexibility. While
sailing, cables are exposed to extreme weather
conditions. Therefore, the use of carbon is
ideal as it can withstand high temperatures
without deforming and can hold moisture.
Another advantage achieved with AEROsix is
the ability to bend the cable without damaging
it. This is important during use and set up as
the cable must follow the curves described
by the spreaders, as well as be coiled during
transport and storage. Furthermore, carbon
fibre cables require low maintenance, are easy
to repair, can be scaled to different sizes and
have excellent durability. All this results in an
extra-safe product that would be impossible to
imagine with other materials than composites.

Reliability and strength
AEROsix was first developed with the aim of
producing an aerodynamic product combining the reliability and strength of Future Fibres'
own multistrand rigging, ECsix, together with
the performance attributes of solid carbon,
such as those seen in Future Fibres' RAZR
rigging. To develop the optimum shape, wind
tunnel studies were carried out at Auckland
University in New Zealand, where the drag
forces were measured and the drag coefficient
determined. In the study, both the drive force
and side force were measured at different apparent wind angles and with different elliptical
shapes, using the same material, fluid density
and wind speed (22 knots average). Using
these results on different yacht models proved
that the extended ellipse (2,7: 1) was the highest performing option and would save yachts
significant time on the racecourse. AEROsix is
now a patented and validated product that was
recently launched with an excellent market
response. The rigging was first tested on the
Magic Carpet 3 superyacht, which has since
taken part in a high-performance regatta with
very positive results.
