The porosity content has a drastic impact on the mesostructure of the composite material. The morphology and
localization of the porosities have an
influence on the relationship between
fibres and matrix. When the porosity
content is limited (Fig. 4.b and d), the
fibres are fully embedded into the matrix whereas they are only linked by matrix bridges in the case of a high porosity content (Fig. 4.a and c).
This difference of structure has a direct
impact on the material's acoustic and
mechanical properties. Sound waves reflect directly on the surface of the material in the absence of porosity, while
they are lost and loose energy into the
porous network of a porous material (Fig. 5.a). Sound absorption is thus
largely improved when increasing the
porosity content. On the contrary, a
higher porosity level impacts mechanical performance (Fig. 5.b). The damage
mechanisms will also differ: fibre breakage appears in dense materials whereas
interfacial failure is more commonly
seen in porous ones.
As a conclusion, nonwoven biocomposites are an attractive solution for

automotive applications that need to
combine different functions conferred
by the same material. This way, the flexibility in terms of material associations
and material properties is much higher
than with other manufacturing processes (such as injection moulding). This
wide range of available properties helps
Tier 1 suppliers offering solutions that
precisely meet automotive manufacturers' requirements.
