Faurecia: lnnovating every day for a better future

and luxury cars, premium, passenger vehicles, and trucks. The
more flexible operational mode
enables rapid decision making,
the development of expert jobs,
and immediate, flawless adaptation to customer requirements
(type of parts for the application, i.e. A-class, semi-structural
or structural; techno-economic performance; industrialization).
The Division works in synergy with the group's other businesses, but also serves as a
cross-business expertise centre for companion activities like
"Interiors" and "Seating".
It also has the backing of the
international Faurecia group,
which operates in 34 countries
worldwide. As a major player,
it works with all the big auto
builders.
A dynamic, essential
international player
Since 2016, FCT has sought
to cover the market segments
that best match the requirements of high-performance
composites. To do so, FCT will
continue to work with its established customers in the automotive sports and luxury categories, providing support for
high-performance technolo-

gies and ever more customized
services. To meet mass-market demand, FCT must make
efforts to make high-performance composites more affordable and adapted for automotive rates of output. Its
teams are working along those
lines to create a technology/process/material
synergy. Faurecia's French plants in
Saint Méloir des Ondes (a few
kilometers away from Saint
Malo) and Theillay (in the Loir
et Cher region) continue to innovate with their established
customers.
FCT has also started to deliver mass-produced semi-structural parts, like the new sparetire compartment made of
SMC/glass-fibre composite on
the new Renault Mégane and
Renault Scénic models since
late 2015. The new part reduces the weight by 2.5 kg, or
30%, compared to steel, and is
produced at high volume (two
parts per 90 seconds).
In another sign of Faurecia's
commitment to expand its
foothold in composites, the
FCT Division is going international to get closer to potential
customers (e.g. in Germany or
the United States), setting up
facilities in zones where there

are composite-oriented clusters (e.g. in the Augsburg area
in Bavaria).
FCT's goal for 2025: to be a
leading international player,
with a focus on three regions
(Europe, North America and
China), and to be a pioneer in
applications for new types of
vehicles, whether electric or
driverless, in order to stay at
the head of the game in the automotive and, more generally,
mobility markets.
Composites are perfectly adapted to structural and semi-structural parts, and they can also
serve as trim materials for luxury cars. Some carbon parts are
not only visible as an aesthetic feature, but also lightweight,
strong, and stiff.
A promise of growth
To speedily remove the only
current limitations of composites, i.e. price and production cycle time, FCT is setting
up institutional and academic partnerships in order to cut
the price of composite materials in half by 2020. Along
with the IRT Jules Verne research and technology institute, the group is participating actively in the Force
(Fibre Optimisée et Réaliste de
Carbone Economique, or economical carbon fibre that is realistic and optimized) project
in Nantes. Thanks to the development of new, considerably less expensive fibres, the
project should enable the use
of carbon on high-volume series vehicles sometime soon after 2020.
Again in Nantes, the Ecole
Centrale graduate school of
engineering has created a
Composite Chair to deal with
topics around the numerical

merical tools for part process/
cost optimization.
In Germany, Faurecia signed a
framework agreement with the
Fraunhofer ICT Institute, an
international reference centre
in the field of composites and
the associated industrial processes, to carry out joint R&D
activities in "engineering and
the representative prototyping
of innovative industrial processes to produce composites"
for automotive applications.
FCT is also extending its industrial partnerships with its
builders in Asia and the United
States, where it is entering into
pre-development contracts with
a focus on cost, time and performance objectives during series production of parts containing composite materials.
According to Faurecia, it is all
along the supply chain that
the use of composites in the
mass-production market will
gain momentum, involving all
players through links with suppliers of all sizes.
For FCT, such growth marks
an important milestone for
this high-performance composite technology, which should
flourish in the years to come.
With the increasingly strict environmental regulations, demand for lighter vehicles is
continually on the rise, which
calls for developing new, even
lighter materials. Composites
will help to drastically reduce
the weight of vehicles, so we
should be finding them more
and more in car seats, interior
fittings, structural chassis parts,
and body components, for improved driving and a better
life.
