advantages over metal superalloys (lower density, resistant to
higher temperatures, less thermal expansion), monolithic ceramics (absence of catastrophic
failure, higher impact strength,
feasibility of larger parts), and
C/SiC CMC (higher oxidative durability, crack resistance,
thermal conductivity, less
permeability).
The LEAP engine in its different versions, in the early stages
of production, accounts for
nearly three-quarters of orders
in contrast to its competitor,
the Part & Whitney PW1000G.
Being ahead of schedule was a
help. It might lose some share in
future, but should remain in the
lead (Figure 5).

On a final note, GE is predicting
a tenfold increase in demand for
ceramic-matrix composites by
the mid-2020s. In other words,
composites in aircraft engines
are flying high! n
