Wall-climbing carbon fibre robot

Disney Research and the Swiss Federal Institute of
Technology in Zurich (ETH) teamed up to create the
VertiGo robot, which has the ability to scale walls.

U

sed in a similar way to a
remote-controlled car,
the VertiGo robot functions thanks to an on-board
computer and two infrared
sensors mounted on the front.

Scaling walls is
no longer impossible
VertiGo is not a typical robot
and its ability to scale walls
comes from a specific build.
The four-wheeled robot has
steerable front wheels, which
allows control over its trajectory while someone is guiding
it. This element, however,
would not suffice on its own
for the robot to climb walls.

Indeed, it also possesses two
independently controlled propellers that provide the thrust
(propulsive force) necessary to
going from a horizontal surface
to a vertical one. Each propeller presents two degrees of
freedom. The rear propeller is
used to thrust towards the wall,
and the front one thrusts in an
upward direction, so that the
robot can scale the wall. This
way, the robot does not fall
once it has started its ascent.
Theoretically, it is even possible
that it could move across ceilings without falling.
Paul Beardsley, principal
research scientist at Disney Research Zurich, indicates that by
transitioning from the ground

to a wall and back again, VertiGo extends the ability of robots
to travel through urban and
indoor environments, and that
the robot is able to move on a
wall quickly and with agility.

the robot's weight had to be

fibre in the robot's body considerably reduced the overall
weight without sacrificing high
strength qualities. The chassis
(baseplate) provides mounting points for two thruster
modules and the wheel
suspensions, while serving as
a carrier for all the electronics
parts and wires. The other,
more complex, parts of the
robot were 3D printed and
carbon rods were chosen for
the wheels and suspensions.
At this time, what the robot
has been created for exactly
is unknown, but the research
teams indicate that it can keep
its footing even when going
through rough surfaces. n
