as well as throughput and cycle times into
account.
As shown in Figure 3, the UD tapes are
available ready-to-process in customized
widths on different spools. The geometrical tolerances meet all the requirements of
the latest fibre placement and automated
tape deposition technologies.

Unidirectional tapes

Organic sheets

Load path-optimized laminates can be
produced by deposition of UD tapes. In
order to obtain cost-efficient materials,
the UD tapes have to be based on heavy
tows. SGL Group investigated different
manufacturing processes for UD tapes
comprising 50k fibres with customized
thermoplastic sizings. Therefore, fibre
handling processes such as spreading or
yarn guidance were analysed. Additionally, several process chains were explored
for the impregnation and consolidation steps - film impregnation, powder
impregnation, melt impregnation as well
as double belt or calendar processes for
the consolidation. For different polymers,
lot sizes and material mixes an individual
optimum of process chains could be identified, taken investment and ramp-up costs

Organic sheets can be produced by impregnation of textiles and textile stacks,
stacking of impregnated UD tapes, or
stacking and pressing of UD tape-based
fabrics. For the production of organic
sheets based on UD tapes, automated
layup technologies have to be used in
order to ensure robust processes and to
meet economical requirements. Furthermore, automated deposition technologies make it possible to produce load
path-optimized laminates for advanced
lightweight performance.

Fabrics and organic sheets respectively
based on fully impregnated and consolidated UD tapes have also been developed
by SGL Group. Master tapes with a width
of more than 200 mm were cut into
so-called slit tapes of 18 mm width. The
weaving technology needs a material of
constant width with sharp, precise edges.
Together with the mechanical requirements of composites for tapes with high
parallelism, this necessitates an advanced
slitting technology.
To identify a slitting technology that
fulfils the above requirements, two differ-

ent slitting technologies were tested and
evaluated - scissor-type and squeeze-type
cut. The principle as well as the cutting results and quality of both types are shown
in Figure 4. The diagram on the left shows
that the squeeze-type method uses a
fixed and a flexible knife to cut or squeeze
the material. This leads to a poor cutting
quality with undulated and damaged tape
edges. In contrast to this, the scissortype cut (right) uses two rotating knifes
positioned obversely. Here, the material
is much better preserved during cutting,
resulting in a high-quality cutting result.
Using the scissor-type cut in a machine
with web edge control, slit tapes suitable
for the weaving process can be produced.

CFRP with thermoplastic-compatible
carbon fibre reinforcement. Compared
to the CFRP with standard carbon fibres
(sizing for epoxy matrix), this is a performance increase of more than 100%. The
results were achieved with cost-efficient
50k heavy tow fibres. The detailed product
information is shown on Table 1 [3].
