Carbon fibre suspension part
for motorcycles
With the added benefit of being suitable for
multiple motorcycle models, this new suspension
part has the particularity of being used for both
the front and rear suspensions of a motorcycle.

A unique part with
specific properties
What makes this suspension
part unique is that it is used
for both the front and the
rear suspension of a motorcycle. When used at the
front, the pair of suspension
units adjusts the rake and
trail of the motorcycle. This

allows for both the adjustment of the chain and the
ride height itself. This, in
turn, gives the rider a far
greater number of setup
options, making the bike
completely adaptable to any
kind of riding style.
The materials used to make
the part needed to provide
a lightweight quality and a
higher stiffness-to-weight
ratio, especially compared to
metal (aluminium or steel)
counterparts, which explains
the choice of carbon fibre
laminates. The lightweight
quality helps to reduce the
unsprung mass the suspen-

BlackStone Tek (BST) was born out of the extensive experience
of its founders in the motorcycle racing industry, aeronautical
engineering, composites knowledge and aerospace fields. BST
has 12 years of experience on the motorcycle racetracks of the
world and in designing custom sport and race bikes.
BST also has an extensive experience of working with carbon
fibre and carbon composites in the aeronautical industry. The
company combines all this knowledge to create the best parts
for motorcycles - wheels, tanks, frames, sub-frames, fenders
- for road and race environments. The unique manufacturing

From 3D concept
to prototype
The suspension part was
developed in collaboration with BST's customer:
J.T. Nesbitt from Bienville
Studios. Early designs went
through a wide variety of
3D concepts before the
final version was approved
by the customer. The next
step was the design of the

out-of-autoclave mould, and
the first test part was then
manufactured and assembled. Destructive testing
was conducted on this first
part in order to find possible failure loads. A second
test part was then manufactured with the use of an
alternative laminate; shear
webs were also added to the
assembled part to maintain
the distance between the
two laminates of the hollow
part. This new part finally
passed the required testing
period and prototype parts
were then manufactured
for the customer to use on
prototype motorcycles. n
