pleasing but they lack the structural integrity necessary for many applications.

Graphene nanomaterials
One of Angstron's goals is to incorporate graphene nanomaterials into these
plastics and identify material combinations that have lower melt temperatures yet enable higher mechanical
performance properties. When used
as a multifunctional filler, graphene
can provide mechanical properties for
higher strength as well as electrical and
thermal conductivity. When you print a
bead of molten plastic, it quickly cools
and solidifies. The next step, which
also uses a bead of molten plastic to
produce the second layer, is where the
problem occurs. The interface between
the top and bottom of the printed layers
is weak. These layers are not acting as
a single unit but as two separate layers
weakly joined together.

New method
Angstron has developed a method to
counteract this condition by compounding polymer filaments with graphene.
The 3D printer melts the plastic to a
liquid that flows and is laid down like ink
from a pen. Graphene's thermal conductivity helps to fuse the different layers
of the plastic. A partially melted bottom
layer and a molten top layer produce a
stronger interface. Using conventional
methods, the interlaminar strength of a
printed part is the point of failure.

Headquartered in Dayton, Ohio, Angstron Materials is the world's largest
producer of graphene materials. The
advanced materials manufacturer is
ISO 9001:2008 certified for full-scale
graphene production. An annual
production capacity of 300 metric tons
supports a range of projects dedicated
to commercializing raw materials and
graphene-enhanced products. Current
production and research efforts
include thermal management, energy
storage and nanocomposites.

3D filament

In addition to traditional plastics for
3D printing, the company is exploring ways to compound graphene into
more advanced materials like nylon and
high-temperature resins. The successful
application of graphene-based nanocomposites for additive manufacturing
does not just rely on the process itself.
3D is growing very quickly. Companies
that do not already have key foundational pieces in place, such as the ability
to produce large quantities of graphene,
will find it hard to catch up.

Knowledge base
Angstron was one of the first companies
to begin producing graphene in large
volumes. The company also has built
a knowledge base over eight years of
experience. This year, the manufacturer
announced its ability to produce master
batches of graphene-enhanced polymers. It has ramped up production and
currently has the capacity to produce
300 metric tons of graphene per year.
The economies of scale that can be
realized for customers gives companies
previously priced out of the graphene
market access to the material's unique
performance advantages and now the
benefits of 3D printing as well.

Aerospace and automotive
Angstron is currently working with major 3D filament companies to commercialize graphene-enhanced 3D printing
materials for a wide range of applications and technologies. The company
is also evaluating different plastics for
potential applications in markets ranging from aerospace and automotive to
mould-making and packaging.
While graphene-enhanced nanocomposite materials offer significant
improvements over traditional materials
used in 3D printing and make concept
design and prototyping faster, a part's
ability to maintain tight tolerances
while performing in often harsh environments is key.
It all goes back to part integrity. It is
necessary to ensure that the part is
sound, that it does not warp during
printing and that the layers do not separate during use. This is a key milestone
for further adoption of 3D printing into
mainstream production processes. n
