injected but is applied to the top of the
preform, which is then moved into the
mould. This simplification makes LCM
very fast. Cycle times of 50 seconds from
mould closing to de-moulding have been
demonstrated with the new Trac 06170
system. Not only does this material cure
quickly, but it also achieves a strong,
covalent 3D network, yielding glass
transition temperatures 10°C higher than
the moulding temperature (Figure 3).

Help with de-moulding
for speed and finish
The de-moulding time plays a significant
role in a composite part's cycle time, and
relates directly to resin matrix reactivity
and Tg. Only a part near its final Tg will
retain dimensional stability and release
quickly and easily from the mould. The
use of mould release agents can help.
With Hexion's Heloxy™ additive 06805,
which has proven fully compatible with
the Trac 06170 resin system, perfect
de-moulding for full laminate mechanical performance and excellent surface
quality has been observed. In most cases,
the Epikote™ resin Trac 06170 enables
rapid de-moulding without having to
use sophisticated mechanical or vacuum
grippers.

Addressing
challenges in preforming
A variety of material, process and
infrastructure parameters determine
part-to-part production time and costs.
After curing, the secondary cycle time

bottleneck to tackle via material and
process improvements is preforming.
The new Epikote™ Trac 06720 curable
preform binder was developed for
demanding composite applications
where stable and strong fibre preforms
are needed, or where essentially no fibre
deformation is acceptable before or
during injection (Figure 4). This product
is compatible with RTM epoxy matrices
and co-cures in CFRP parts. It addresses
the following preforming challenges:
- Ensures fibre fixation for faster
preform handling and positioning,
providing improved preform quality
consistency and reproducibility
- Improves lay-up definition with
less preforming material, leading to
improved permeability and higher
filling rates that minimize the
required injection time
- Offers improved textile stability at
higher mould temperatures, enabling
faster injection and higher production
rates

Conclusions
In automotive manufacturing, composites provide the highest weight saving
potential compared to steel or aluminium. However, large-scale adoption of
composites by the automotive industry
is hampered by cost, particularly for
CFRP. Hexion's newest RTM and LCM
epoxy resin systems make very short

cycle times possible, down to less than 1
minute, and allow easy de-moulding. The
company's new, curable preform binder
enables efficiencies in preforming. The
resulting shorter matrix curing times and
process optimization can help reduce
CFRP part processing costs. Along with
optimal utilization of CFRP properties
by part design adjustment, along with
more realistic safety factors and parts
consolidation, these new resin products
can continue to decrease the cost of
composites in automotive manufacturing
and beyond. n
