Fast production epoxies
for lightweight automotive composites
State-of-the-art epoxy resin technologies from Hexion enable costeffective light-weighting and high build rates in the automotive
industry via resin transfer and liquid compression moulding (RTM and
LCM) processes. Curing cycles under 1 minute, easy de-moulding, and

egulations to reduce emissions and
improve fuel efficiency are driving
the demand for lightweight
materials in automotive applications.
While the use of high-strength steel and
aluminium can reduce weight by 2040%, the light-weighting champions are
composites, with a 60-70% weight reduction potential compared to conventional
steel. Lightweight composite materials
can be costly, though, especially carbon
fibre-reinforced composites (CFRP).
Optimization of CFRP properties and
cost improvement are in order.

have succeeded in the most demanding
composite applications in numerous industries. Epoxies form the most durable
composites with excellent fatigue and

Resin transfer moulding (RTM) has long
been used for reliable high-quality parts,
even those with complex geometries.

Newer high-pressure (HP) RTM and
liquid composite moulding (LCM)
technologies can produce high-quality
CFRP parts with short cycle times and
support further process automation.

Basically, HP-RTM entails several steps:
consolidation of fibre into a preform,
placement of the preform in the mould,
and injection of the resin/hardener
blend. The low-viscosity resin fills the
cavity rapidly and impregnates the
