Composites are being used more and
more extensively in airplanes and cars.
All the key products in transportation
take advantage of the many properties of
composite materials. Superior strength/
weight, durability, tailorable physical
properties and corrosion resistance are
just a few of the advantages that make
composites such a compelling material
alternative in the aerospace and automotive industries. But how does our industry
face the current challenge of mass production?
The JEC Forum, which will take place for
the fourth time in Boston next September
22-23 at the recently enhanced Boston
Convention and Exhibition Centre
(BCEC), is the place to analyse composite developments in the company of
experts and manufacturers. The forum
will focus on design, optimization and
simulation on the first day, and on mass
production and cost reduction in the
aerospace and automotive industries on
the second day.
Following the usual model based on JEC's
Knowledge and Networking philosophy,
the event is global and offers a full range
of services over two days: BtoB Meetings,
Poster Sessions, Keynote speakers and
orators, Networking breaks and events,
tabletop exhibitors, and a JEC Leadership
Circle dedicated to simulation. Predicting
the behaviour of composite materials
without actually manufacturing the part
is an important endeavour, since it can
save significant amounts of money. With
several industries leaning towards mass

production, speed is essential but accuracy cannot be sacrificed in the process.
In that regard, simulation tools need to
provide a global view that encompasses
virtual design, virtual testing, and virtual
manufacturing.
For a long time, composites have been
used to replace metal in a way that is
based only on considerations of a metal
component's geometry, with the composite material regarded as a sort of "black
metal". However, this approach fails to
take into account the fact that, to be used
to their full potential, composite structures require more analysis during the
design step than equivalent metal ones. A
session on "Design optimization: the end
of the black metal approach" will delve
into the optimization of this first and
crucial step in concept development.
For the last few decades, the aerospace
market has become a major opportunity
for the composite industry. While the
automotive industry is evolving quickly
towards high production rates and lower
costs, there are still challenges to be met
in the aerospace industry: any of the more
inexpensive mass-produced parts with
potential for use in aircraft must also meet
stringent aviation requirements, especially in terms of strength, stiffness and
damage tolerance. The Aerospace session
will cover all the issues and potential
solutions the industry is working on, and
the Automotive session, just how the
industry plans to overcome both cost and
production time issues. Come and share!
