Automotive in Europe
In the European automotive
sector, which constitutes a
promising market, the fibres
most used in 2012 (Figure
2) were as follows: wood
(37%), cotton (24%), flax
(19%), kenaf (8%), hemp
(5%) and various other
types of fibre (7%), for a
total 80,000 MT. Cotton
is imported from outside
of Europe, but flax and

hemp are grown there (at
least most of it). There is a
veritable revival of natural
fibre production in Europe,
and composites account
only in part for the phenomenon. Thanks to particularly
favourable soils and climate
conditions, France and
Belgium have always been a
region of choice to produce
very high-quality flax for the
textile industry. For hemp,

large-scale production is
more recent. The rope and
drapery industries no longer
use large volumes since the
advent of synthetic materials for such applications.
Thanks to new techniques,
new agro-foodstuff, pharmaceutical and also textile
applications are on the rise
for hemp, and the composite sector also benefits and
participates in this phenomenon. In 2012, 14.4%
of European hemp fibre was
used in composites (Source:
European Industrial Hemp
Association). The expanded
use of hemp is borne out
by the increasing areas in
Europe under hemp cultivation (Figure 3) - 2014
was already a record year at
18,300 hectares, and that
figure could reach 22,000 ha
in 2015.
By 2020, depending on
the scenario, the automotive sector could become
Europe's second-largest
WPC user. Compression
moulding, extrusion and

thermoforming processes
can be used to create many
different parts, especially for
interior trim. From 60,000
MT in 2012, automotive
could account for 80,000300,000 MT by 2020,
given the current regulatory
pressures.
Next come the furnishing
and consumer goods sectors
with 15,000 MT in 2012
and potentially reaching
100,000-200,000+ MT by
2020; and then injection
compounds, with 40,000 in
2012, potentially reaching
200,000-300,000+ MT by
2020.

WPC worldwide
As we have just seen, wood
plastic composites account
for most of the biocomposite volumes in Europe.
This is also true worldwide. Figure 4 provides an
estimate of global production in 2015 by geographical region (Source: Nova
Institute 2014), for a total of
3,785,000 metric tons. In recent years, China's capacity
