T

he ground-breaking VoraforceTM
5300 epoxy system was developed
to provide ultra-fast moulding
cycle times, as low as 30 seconds, to
produce hundreds of thousands of
structural carbon-fibre or glass-fibre
reinforced composite parts up to 50%
lighter than conventional steel assemblies. Designed for use in high-pressure
resin transfer moulding (HP RTM) and
wet compression processes, this system
offers a unique balance of processing
characteristics to improve manufacturing efficiency.

Low viscosity and long latency
The system is formulated to provide extremely low viscosity, as low as 10mPa.
sec at typical processing temperatures, a
factor of five times lower than state-ofthe-art competition. This low viscosity
enables a faster injection of resin into
the moulding tool, improved infusion
and wet-out of the fibre preform to
create high-quality composites with
minimal void content. This new epoxy
system provides significantly long
latency, which is the time before the
materials gels and stops flowing in the

tool. This latency is a critical attribute
for customers producing larger parts,
where flow lengths are challenging
for traditional fast epoxies or polyurethanes. Dow sees a strong trend towards
increased part sizes, as customers take
advantage of composite part integration
benefits, avoiding secondary finishing
and joining operations associated with
multi-part assemblies.

Extremely flexible
Once the material has gelled, the
epoxy system cures extremely rapidly,
minimising cycle times and cost of
high-throughput production. In the
case of HP RTM, moulding cycle time

is a combination of epoxy injection, preform infusion and cure, and is therefore
somewhat influenced by part size. The
system is extremely flexible in processing and has demonstrated injection
times of 15-60 seconds with consequent
curing times of 30-120 seconds. When
used with wet compression, it can be
even faster, as the injection phase is
conducted outside the tool, allowing moulding cycle times down to 30
seconds.

Weight and cost reduction
Of course, efficient processing is only
part of the affordability challenge. The
