this can be seen in many flame, smoke
and toxicity (FST) tests. For example the
materials extinguish almost instantly in
traditional flame tests. The smoke and toxic
gas released when a high temperature flame
is applied is negligible and the BZ materials
easily meet aircraft interiors requirements for
these aspects. Unlike phenolic technologies,
BZ demonstrates no microcracking and
no water generated during cure, with the
added benefit of improved durability. The
benzoxazine prepregs have very good fire
barrier performance due to the high char
yield of the resins. They are therefore suitable
for applications in aircraft engines, nacelles
and auxiliary power units.
After measuring density before and after
cure, BZ demons¬trates a shrinkage of
only 1.06%, compared to equivalent epoxy
shrinkage of between 4-5% [1]. This offers
the potential for lower residual stress in the
applications, with better part dimension
tolerance and less spring-back. Indeed, after
3,000 hours of thermal aging, some BZ
prepreg formulas lose less than 0.3% of their
weight while retaining 100% of their shear
strength with no degradation.

Ease of processing
Loctite BZ prepregs have been developed for
good handling characteristics, such as tack
and drape. This is seen in both hand lay-up
and in automated processing such as automated tape placement (ATL) and advance fiber

placement (AFP). Successful AFP processing has been demonstrated on machines
from multiple equipment manufacturers
including Electroimpact, Fives, Ingersoll and
M Torres. Indeed the shop stability of the
BZs results in much more consistent lay-up
characteristics even when fabricating large
structures which require considerable lay-up
time. The cure cycle of the Loctite BZ prepregs is similar to that of typical epoxy prepegs and notably shorter than that of BMIs,
resulting in significant cost savings during
the fabrication step. BZs can be post-cured to
optimize the service temperature, and again
the post-cure cycles are considerably shorter
than those of typical BMIs.
In addition, the lower heat of cure of the BZ
system offers a lower exotherm potential.
The prepregs show a heat of cure of only
106 joules/gram, compared to 210 joules/
gram in a typical epoxy prepreg system. The
lower heat of reaction allows for a potentially
faster cure cycle and consistency of quality
between thick and thin parts.
Not only does BZ compare favourably to
primary structure epoxies, but it also has the
potential for cost-saving out-of-autoclave
(OOA), vacuum-bag-only cure. The material
meets or exceeds all primary structure
requirements with OOA cure at less than
1% porosity. Indeed Loctite BZ prepegs are
being evaluated as repair materials due to the
combination of room temperature storage
and OOA cure.

Conclusion
Loctite BZ prepreg resins eliminate the need
for refrigerated shipping and storage, enable
increased service temperatures, lead to
improved safety and lower residual stress and
contribute to better thermal stability. They
demons¬trate high hot/wet mechanical
properties, ambient stability, excellent FST
performance and low cure exotherm and
shrinkage. In addition, the resins have proven
highly successful in both automated processing and OOA, allowing for multiple systems
capable of providing a balance of service
temperature, toughness and processing.
Henkel recognizes the importance of having
full confidence in materials supply, which
is why the company has direct control of a
well-established supply chain for BZ monomers. Some BZ products are already fully
com¬mercialized and available in unidirectional tape and fabric reinforcement formats,
with others in immediate pre-commercialization status. Of course, being new to market,
BZ requires further experience to build user
confidence, but its inherent benefits mean its
cost in-use is significantly lower than comparable technologies. n
