LIFE BEYOND NUMBERS "Innovation - do we have to...?" 2.WHY IS SILICON VALLEY SO UNIQUE...? Recently I was in Silicon Valley producing a 13 episode documentary series around the entrepreneurial spirit of the region. During filming and interviewing several local business leaders the reason innovation and creativity is so important is simple. There are a number of factors, the business environment has a lot to do with it. In Silicon Valley there is Stanford University with its Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies producing bright ambitious thought leaders. Competitive advantage, growth and profitability... Funding is available for start-ups and innovative ideas. Money is available to entrepreneurs early in the business development process; not only when the model is proven. If we don't innovate; we'll be "out innovated" by someone else, becoming irrelevant in our market. It doesn't matter whether a company is a small corner shop, such as Starbucks was in Seattle back in 1971, or a global financial institution; they are all in the customer service business. The spirit of the area is one of transformation and disruption. Business Entrepreneurs here don't want to simply make money; they what to change the way we live, and they are prepared to take the risk of failure to achieve it. Customers demand value and service; many times they know what they want but not what they need; very few people realised how useful a simple ride sharing app would be for example - Uber is now worth more than £50 billion... Whilst filming and interviewing in a diner - Buck's of Woodside in Redwood City - lots of people saw what we were doing and offered ideas, help and introductions; they wanted to know how they could help us be successful. The job of innovation and creativity is to deliver services, products and experiences that the customer values and can't get from anywhere else. It is not just important that people within organisations innovate - it is critical to their survival... Try that in Luxembourg and see what happens...
