mais ce fut dans la dernière vague de la
base à 42 qu’une place lui fut confiée.
Et il la garda jusqu’à la fin car,
lorsqu’un capitaine de base tient
un solide élément, il ne le lâche plus.
RECORD
Au premier jour des tentatives à 222,
le secteur 3 fut le premier à être complet.
Mais, pour tout le monde, la figure n’avait
encore rien de vraiment prometteur.
Les flèches en construction se mettaient
à flotter en se connectant sur une base
au taux de chute trop rapide.
Les vagues et les mouvements latéraux
étaient impressionnants. Durant les
réunions de capitaines, l’idée de changer
la première figure tentait de faire son
chemin, mais BJ Worth restait buté sur
son plan initial, et cela pendant deux
jours. Durant ces deux journées,
la figure grossissait mais vivait énormément. Six tentatives à 222 furent réalisées,
et deux furent perdues à cause des
problèmes classiques que l’on rencontre
toujours durant ces manips impliquant
plusieurs avions en formation.
A deux reprises le World Team dut
redescendre de 6 000 mètres d’altitude
sans pouvoir sauter. La première fois fut
à cause d’un manque d’oxygène dans
l’un des avions et à une poignée de
minutes du largage seulement.
La seconde fois était due à une
incompréhension dans l’ordre de
largage. Deux Twin Otter de queue se
vidèrent alors que le largueur de l’avion
leader avait annulé la mise en place en
vue de demander un second passage
pour mauvaise prise d’axe.
Ce genre de raté engendre une dépense
inutile d’environ 8 000 dollars
(par largage annulé) sur laquelle ont
longuement débattu l’organisateur BJ
Worth et les propriétaires de Skydive
Arizona afin de savoir qui allait devoir
payer l’addition.
Le dernier jour
Pour ce dernier jour, BJ Worth fut
finalement d’accord pour changer le 1er
point de la séquence à 222, la figure
avec les flèches occasionnant trop de
vagues durant la construction.
C’est donc la 2ème figure initialement
prévue qui devenait le 1er point.
Présentant principalement des lignes,
C’est la fameuse compétitrice norvégienne Lise Aune
qui donnait le signal du break en ouvrant sa voile
principale à 2100 mètres d’altitude. « Je n’avais
jamais fait çà auparavant, confie t-elle. Quand on est
extrait de la formation, la vision est hallucinante ! »

cette figure était plus facile à faire voler
durant sa construction. Le 2ème point
devenait la 1ère figure prévue avec un
lâcher total pour 84 personnes allant
chercher leur prise en stairstep dans
un mouvement arrière latéral.
