A HIRING FREEZE IN MAJOR TECH FIRMS
Charlotte Ladonne
(BSc IFI 19)
Over the past six months, most of the tech giants based in the
country have decided to reduce their global workforce.
Although Ireland has not been hit as hard as the US, according
to the Central Bank of Ireland, more than 2,300 jobs have been
cut. And in an interview with RTE, the Irish national broadcaster,
Una Fitzpatrick, director of Technology Ireland, said she
expected the situation to remain difficult for a couple of years:
Lucas Stump
(CESEM 19)
Kiera O'Farrell
(CESEM 10)
Grand Canal Dock in Dubin,
also known as Silicon Docks, is
known for its modern office
towers and flats on the
redeveloped banks of the
River Liffey.
T
" We're still going through an exceptional situation, with some
redundancies or a slowdown in hiring in many of the larger
companies " confirms Julian Kulkarni (CESEM 95). The Alumni
says there are still opportunities to be found in smaller tech
companies. He recommends the Morgan McKinley website,
which regularly posts jobs. Charlotte Ladonne (BSc IFI 19) also
recommends relying on networking and getting referrals,
especially when looking for a job in tech, as well as being active
on LinkedIn: " Finding your first job can be challenging,
especially as the market is less dynamic at the moment.
So don't be afraid to reach out as the Irish are friendly and
eager to help you out young graduates. "
he tech sector is central to the Irish
economy, accounting for 164,000 jobs, a 29%
increase since 2019, according to the Irish Examiner
newspaper. While Apple is based in Cork,
social media giants Google, Facebook, Twitter and
LinkedIn operate all of their European and sometimes
also Middle Eastern and African activities
from Dublin. Other big tech names in the country
include e-commerce stars Amazon, PayPal or Airbnb,
as well Dropbox and Salesforce. As a result,
the work environment is very multicultural and
multilingual profiles like CESEM graduates are valued
points. Lucas Stump (CESEM 19), Sales Development
Representative for the German, Austrian
and Swiss market at LinkedIn: " Since German is
rare, it's particularly valued and salaries are very
competitive, with tech companies also offering a
lot of perks like nice offices, free food or the ability
to work remotely for up to 6 months a year, " reveals
the Alumni. A seductive argument, for those wishing
to work for a few months under the sun, in a
country where the cold winters and heavy rain can
put some people off.
While technology remains the biggest job provider,
there are opportunities in other sectors: " Both digital
marketing and sales roles are available, with
starting salaries of around 40,000 and up to
100,000 with bonuses, " reveals Charlotte Ladonne
(BSc IFI 19), digital marketing manager at Eir Ireland,
the main provider of telecommunications
services in Ireland, owned by Xavier Niel. There is
also a thriving consulting sector in Ireland, with
most of the international consulting firms having a
presence here. Engagement Manager at McKinsey
& Company, Kiera O'Farrell (CESEM 10), says the
McKinsey Dublin office is " growing rapidly, mainly
driven by the creation of lots of new opportunities
in Data and Analytics, " and is always looking for
international profiles. Pharmaceuticals, life
sciences, medical devices, high value manufacturing,
audit, as well as the agricultural sector are the
other strong industries in the country: " Ireland's
agri-food industry accounts for approximately 8%
of GDP, amounting to almost 160,000 jobs. It also
represents a major proportion of exports of Irishowned
enterprises and its products are sold in
over 170 markets around the world. Included in this
is meat, dairy, seafood and food & drink, " points
Isobel O'Neill (CESEM 19), Marketing Executive at
Kerry.
A MORE HORIZONTAL WORK CULTURE
THAN IN FRANCE
An advantage of working in Ireland: a more pragmatic
approach to recruitment. " During interviews,
questions are less about your degree and more
about your experience and personality. In addition,
