A QUEST FOR MEANING

Cacao Source, San Marcos La Laguna, Sololá, Guatemala
Channel Leclerc's professional life is driven by passion and meaning, which she
finds in her current position. She works for the social enterprise Cacao Source
among local indigenous communities of Guatemala. She discovered this project
during her vacation there: " 45% of the population in Guatemala is indigenous and
has suffered from political oppression, massacres and civil armed conflict. The goal
of Cacao Source is to support indigenous cacao producers to develop international
sales of ceremonial cacao blocks. We are also creating an NGO to provide additional
support to them and their family, as well as a training center in permaculture
and an eco-education center " she explains. And even though she only has a parttime
contractand a low salary that is in line with local income standardsher days
are quite full: " I do everything from product development to attending fundraising
events. Sometimes, I go on farm trips around Guatemala to understand the reality
of cacao producers. In the future, I see Cacao Source advocate internationally for
a fair trade chocolate as an alternative to the current chocolate industry extracting
land use and exploiting humans, especially in Africa " she states. The rest of the
time, she teaches yoga and runs wellness retreats. What are the reasons that led
the alumnus to choose such an unusual path for a business school graduate? " After
graduation, I joined a big corporation but it felt more challenging to initiate changes
in such an environment " . Since then, I have worked mostly with charities and foundations.
In the future, I could see myself moving on to a social mission-driven
company with a horizontal management style such as the one we have in Cacao
Source " she says. For the time being, she enjoys being immersed in the Guatemalan
local culture and having a job with a strong social component.
