For now it is his only option until officials make a compromise and step up in the implementation of the Commission. Still, Ncube stressed that the biggest defence to press freedom was profitable media: “It’s that bottom line that defends you. It’s important to have a private media that has a mission in its heart and business in its mind.” Incestuous criminal and governmental relationships In Guatemala, the fight against drug trafficking has put José Rubén Zamora, his publishing activities, and his family right in the crosshairs of criminals and at times, the government. “They (drug traffickers) seek immunity from parliament by joining parliament,” said Zamora, founder and publisher of three Guatemalan newspapers, including El Periódico, and generally a thorn in the side of ruling parties. He’s had grenades thrown at him, the roof of his home blown off, his car blown up and direct death threats to him and his family. In August 2008 Zamora was kidnapped from his home, drugged and left naked on an anthill 50 miles away from the city. He was there nearly a day before he was found. “I was really sure that this was it, I thought that this was the end of me and this is the end of my work and my convictions and my dreams and aspirations,” he said. But he lived to see another day and his business goes on. In fact, he touted his company’s multimedia projects, such as a mobile application for the World Cup and a new product to appeal to Guatemalan expats. “We will never lose sight of our mission,” he said.
