WAN-IFRA Magazine - November 2009 - (Page 16) 16 NEWSPAPER PRINTING 11.2009 www.wan-ifra.org/magazine Automation still steals th The objectives of the news publishing companies and printing operations are the targets for the production equipment manufacturers: lower production costs, simplified working processes, guaranteed quality, saved energy, increased productivity and new sources of income. The concepts and solutions for all this were on display at IFRA Expo 2009 in Vienna. The automation of production functions and processes was in the spotlight more than ever at this year’s exhibition. Among the press manufacturers, it is first and foremost manroland that is driving towards the fully automated press with its “One Touch” concept. Following in the wake of the launch of the autoprint series last year and the first commissioning of the APL plate changing robot, APL logistics for plate transport has now bridged the gap in the automation chain between prepress and printing. Orders for APL logistics have been received to date from the Mittelbayerische Zeitung and Mannheimer Morgen, with commissioning of the systems scheduled for the first quarter of 2010. With its PlateTrans system, KBA presented a concept for its compact presses for the automatic connection of plate production with the press. Development partner of this technically sophisticated total solution for integrated plate logistics is the German company Beil Registersysteme in Abensberg. Stefan Kreitczick, managing director of Beil, presented the components for this modular rail-based solution at KBA’s press conference during Expo. The first customer will probably be a future Cortina user in Europe, said Marketing Director Klaus Schmidt. It was also announced at the press conference that KBA is going to enter into new fields of activity such as packaging, water conditioning and thermal solar energy technology because its “core market of printing is not growing any more, and we are obliged to look for new business opportunities,” says Claus Bolza-Schünemann, deputy president of KBA. “But we will not withdraw from print as our core business.” Wifag featured its graduated plate change automation concept: the semi-automated system (SMX), which, combined with a cassette system, can be upgraded to a fully-automated plate changing system (APX), and as a future option in case of sufficient customer demand, the automatic plate cassette loader (FPL). Another new Wifag automation product is “autoride,” a solution for the controlled shutting down of the newspaper press in the event of a power failure. Goss also relies on increasing automation and versatility to allow clients to produce an extended gamut of products: “Return on Investment is maximised through reduced waste, turnaround times and labour while lowering run-length thresholds and expanding equipment utilisation.” According to Goss, another factor is the switching between daily coldset to heatset production and changing web widths automatically. Hybrid printing and semi-commercial gain major impetus – pioneer Canada There is no law that says newspaper printing operations may only print newspapers and that newspapers have to look like most of them do today. Innovation can act as a means of combating the crisis as well as an urgently needed generator of income. Newspapers modelled along the lines of magazines – in relation to layout, format, materials and applied techniques – are becoming more commonplace. Heatset dryers and UV curing systems as well as the corresponding inks and papers are available and waiting for use in the production of printed advertising matter, catalogues, brochures and “daily magazines.” Manfred Werfel, executive director of Newspaper Production at WAN-IFRA, says: “Tomorrow’s newspaper is taking shape today.” Whereas newspaper presses equipped with complete heatset APL logistics is an important component of the manroland “One Touch” concept. Pictured is the plate transport device. The trend towards the fully-automatic press is in full swing, many of the necessary process control systems are available and have shown themselves to be mature.
