IFRA Expo 2009 Gazette - Thursday, 15 October - (Page 14) 14 DigiTal prinTing Thursday, 15 October 2009 www.wan-ifra.org/magazine Progress picks up Digital press manufacturers are providing newspapers with new options from which to choose and are working with newspaper publishers to create new, personalised products. Despite the fact that there are no digital presses here this week, there are some interesting developments in this sector to keep an eye on. So far, most of the newspaper market for these presses is in Europe, where small runs for large papers are more common than in the United States. But these manufacturers also foresee a future filled with hyperlocalised, micro-zoned and individualised editions, and where digital presses populate outlying production facilities and reduce transportation costs associated with a central production area. These presses are also useful for short-run publications such as the newspapers that are distributed to first-class airline passengers. Océ’s Josef Simmerl believes, however, that digital printing will go beyond niche markets, and will be used to print both international titles and short-run national titles of 3000-5000 copies. “But it won’t happen overnight,” he says. “It’s a new business model.” “niiu” – personalised newspaper project in Berlin At IFRA Expo, Océ (Stand xxxx) is showcasing “niiu” (http://niiu.de/), a new project starting in Berlin, in partnership with the German company InterTi. The 24-page newspaper is what Simmerl, responsible for the digital printing segment at Océ, calls the world’s premiere of the first personalised newspaper. It differs from previous and similar projects in that it will not only utilise user-selected content from a variety of (mostly German) newspapers, but also include content from the reader’s social networking sites. It is printed on Océ’s JetStream on newsprint and delivered to the reader’s home. The normal copy price will be 1.80 Euros; 1.20 Euros for students. “Our goal is to reach 5000 readers within six months,” says InterTi’s Managing Director Wanja S. Oberhof, who initiated the project. Digital inkjet press from Océ prints daily newspapers in Spain Océ has recently introduced its new Jetstream 3300 system, which is capable of printing on a 30-inch web and running at 492 feet (or 150 meters) per minute. This is the second 30-inch model available from Océ – the first is the JetStream 2800, which runs at 427 fpm (130 meters). Both presses can be run as black-only versions with field upgrades to a full CMYK colour configuration and can be equipped with a fifth print head for a future additional spot colour. The first shipment of the 3300 is planned for the second quarter of 2010, but the company’s 2200 colour web press is already in use at Imcodávila, an independent contract newspaper printer owned by outsourcer Hidelsu, based in Ávila, Spain, where it currently prints six daily newspapers. Océ says it is “the world’s first short-run production site for domestic titles in colour with average daily print runs of up to 5000 80-page colour newspapers.” Imcodávila also plans to move some of its short-run Spanish newspaper contracts from weboffset to the digital press. As Luciano Monedero, managing director of Imcodávila, says, the maximum production capacity of the press is 5000 copies per night. If the demand rises, he would consider installing more presses in other cities in Spain. New Versamark models and an imprinting system from Kodak Carol Christopher editor@wan-ifra.org At the show, Océ uses a 65-pageper-minute toner printer to produce live samples of a number of compact-sized newspapers like Welt kompakt and Handelsblatt – News am Abend in a slightly reduced format (320 x 220 mm) . Rinus Hoebeke, Kodak’s newspaper segment marketing manager, believes that digital printing is one of the main topics at this year’s IFRA Expo. The company added four new models to its Versamark VL series printing systems family, which have the ability to print http://www.wan-ifra.org/magazine http://niiu.de/ Table of Contents for the Digital Edition of IFRA Expo 2009 Gazette - Thursday, 15 October IFRA Expo 2009 Gazette - Thursday, 15 October IFRA Expo 2009 Gazette - Thursday, 15 October - (Page 1) IFRA Expo 2009 Gazette - Thursday, 15 October - (Page 2) IFRA Expo 2009 Gazette - Thursday, 15 October - (Page 3) IFRA Expo 2009 Gazette - Thursday, 15 October - (Page 4) IFRA Expo 2009 Gazette - Thursday, 15 October - (Page 5) IFRA Expo 2009 Gazette - Thursday, 15 October - (Page 6) IFRA Expo 2009 Gazette - Thursday, 15 October - (Page 7) IFRA Expo 2009 Gazette - Thursday, 15 October - (Page 8) IFRA Expo 2009 Gazette - Thursday, 15 October - (Page 9) IFRA Expo 2009 Gazette - Thursday, 15 October - (Page 10) IFRA Expo 2009 Gazette - Thursday, 15 October - (Page 11) IFRA Expo 2009 Gazette - Thursday, 15 October - (Page 12) IFRA Expo 2009 Gazette - Thursday, 15 October - (Page 13) IFRA Expo 2009 Gazette - Thursday, 15 October - (Page 14) IFRA Expo 2009 Gazette - Thursday, 15 October - (Page 15) IFRA Expo 2009 Gazette - Thursday, 15 October - (Page 16) IFRA Expo 2009 Gazette - Thursday, 15 October - (Page 17) IFRA Expo 2009 Gazette - Thursday, 15 October - (Page 18) IFRA Expo 2009 Gazette - Thursday, 15 October - (Page 19) IFRA Expo 2009 Gazette - Thursday, 15 October - (Page 20) IFRA Expo 2009 Gazette - Thursday, 15 October - (Page 21) IFRA Expo 2009 Gazette - Thursday, 15 October - (Page 22) IFRA Expo 2009 Gazette - Thursday, 15 October - (Page 23) IFRA Expo 2009 Gazette - Thursday, 15 October - (Page 24) http://www.nxtbook.fr/nxtbooks/ifra/2009_10_gazette_4 http://www.nxtbook.fr/nxtbooks/ifra/2009_10_gazette_3 http://www.nxtbook.fr/nxtbooks/ifra/2009_10_gazette_2 http://www.nxtbook.fr/nxtbooks/ifra/2009_10_gazette_1 http://www.nxtbook.fr/nxtbooks/ifra/IFRAexpo2009cat http://www.nxtbookMEDIA.com
