High-performance carbon fibre for aerospace
SGL Group has developed and started serial production of an innovative
carbon fibre. Bearing the name Sigrafil
C T50-4.8/280, the fibre is characterized by a high Young's modulus, making it particularly adapted for aerospace applications.
Pressure vessels, drive shafts, profiles, and
sheet moulding compounds (SMCs) are
other applications, as the fibre meets high
mechanical requirements thanks to its high stiffness and strength.
The high Young's modulus based on a 50k fibre (50,000 individual filaments)
is unique to the market.
Previously, only fibres with lower numbers of filaments (e.g. 12k or 24k)
achieved these high mechanical properties (4,800 MPa, 280 GPa). This classifies the new carbon fibre between standard modulus and intermediate modulus, with a property combination never exhibited before for 50k - in the "advanced modulus" range.

Fibre sizing products designed
to react with polyamide resin matrices
Michelman showcased its Hydrosize Link U470 and U480 fibre sizing products designed to react with polyamide resin matrices. These high-performance sizing products are added during the fibre manufacturing process and are activated during
compounding to increase the interfacial adhesion between the fibre
and polymer matrix. This improved adhesion provides resistance to
the glycol fluids used in coolant systems and allows automakers to
produce cost-effective components that perform to the exact specifications required.
Michelman also highlighted its portfolio of Hydrosize grades for
use with recycled carbon fibres. These include Hydrosize U2-04,
Hydrosize HP3-02, Hydrosize PA845H and Hydrosize HP-1632.
These formulations are compatible with previously sized recycled
carbon fibre, typically epoxy, as well as with most common thermoplastic resins such as PA, PP, PC, and high temperature thermoplastics such as PPS and PEEK.

A technology that enables the selective targeting of
performance gains by printing graphene into composite structures
Throughout the show Applied Graphene Materials (AGM)
demonstrated Structural Ink, a novel technology that enables the selective targeting of performance gains, by printing graphene into composite structures where it will be most design
and cost efficient. AGM also introduced their Genable platform dispersion technology, a range of dispersions specifically engineered to
enable the incorporation and outstanding properties of graphene
nanoplatelets into composite and coatings formulations. Other developments from AGM included a new product launch in Genable
4400 (a graphene enhanced thermal paste) and several exciting market collaborations including work with Magna Exteriors and SHD
Composites applying a commercially available graphene enhanced
CFRP material onto the Fenyr SuperSport Tailgate.

A lightning strike protection prepreg
Park Electrochemical announced the introduction of Electroglide lightning strike protection prepreg for aerospace applications. Electroglide
lightning strike protection prepreg has undergone stringent testing by
an independent certified laboratory, where the material is exposed to
electrical charges that mimic a lightning strike. In such testing, Parks'
Electroglide lightning strike protection prepreg was exposed to 200,000 amperes of current with no failures.
Electroglide is an epoxy based lightning strike protection system compatible
with most epoxy prepregs, primers and paints and offers protection for aircraft
from lightning strikes. It can be processed both in-autoclave and out-of-autoclave with a dual cure capability (250°F and 350°F).
Electroglide has superior handling during the layup processes, compared
to other lightning strike protection solutions, because of its flow characteristics, high tack and drapability. Conductive substrates are offered in a variety of
weights and substrate types (copper and aluminum) to meet Zone 1A, Zone
1C and Zone 2A requirements.

A versatile range of carbon fibre optimized for out-of-autoclave processes
As the composites market pursues automated processes for high-rate production, Porcher Industries' Dry Fibre offer a new way of processing materials Out-of-Autoclave (OOA). Porcher Industries Dry Fibre is a versatile range of carbon fibre functionalized with a binder interface. Optimised
for AFP-made preforms for thermoset resin infusion or injection, Dry Fibre provides similar component properties to conventional prepreg stacking, enabling the high-speed production of complex shaped parts with outstanding buy-to-fly ratio. The technology uses a cost-effective one-stepprocess to impregnate the fibre. As a result, Dry Fibre can be produced in flat calibrated width for AFP or rounder non-calibrated formats for winding, with a variety of different fibre aerial weights, binder chemistries and binder rates available on request.

A UV LED curing solution for coating and adhesive applications
Phoseon Technology, in partnership with The Mäder Group and Université Haute Alsace demonstrated its latest UV LED curing solutions for
composite coating. Phoseon LED technology is a particularly fit for these applications due to the compact size, ease of integration, and high intensity output achieved through optimized LED thermal management. Users of Phoseon LED curing systems can process a variety of materials, including thin and heat-sensitive substrates, at maximum production speeds with low-input power.
