The general transportation market is in
for some significant upsets. We might say
that the manoeuvring has begun, and it
concerns all sectors. Everyone is talking
about the issue of mobility, and that begs the
question, among others, of how tomorrow's
metropolitan areas will be organized, given
that more than 50% of the world's population
already lives in cities.
Let's start with the automotive sector, with
Beijing's bolt-from-the-blue announcement
that it will follow the example of Paris
and London, which want to ban vehicles
powered by petrol- and diesel-powered
thermal engines by 2040. The challenge is
equal to the issues of pollution and energy
dependence. In 2016, more than 24 million
cars were sold in China, 14% more than the
year before. That accounts for a quarter of the
global market, and according to forecasts, 42
million cars will be sold in China in 2024, or
a third of the global market. Measures are
already in place to promote the acquisition
of rechargeable electric and hybrid vehicles,
but sales have only just begun, with just over
500,000 vehicles sold in 2016. Even so, that
is 53% more than in 2015.
So things are moving along. Volkswagen
already has plans to sell 1.5 million electric
vehicles in China by 2025. And RenaultNissan and Dongfeng are setting up a joint
venture to produce a small electric SUV:
another example among others, confirming
that this is not just a fad, but a broad and
permanent trend.

world's second-largest entity in the railway
(train and subway) sector - although still
far behind the largest one, which is the huge
China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation
(CRRC), created on 1 June 2015 from the
merger between CSR Corporation Limited
and China CNR Corporation Limited. The
rise of this railway giant has changed the
rules of the game. Now that the Chinese
railway network has been completely
transformed (in just twenty years!) and,
among other things, boasts some 22,000
kilometres of high-speed lines, CRRC can
now venture into exports, where the already
stiff competition is getting even stiffer.
Bombardier could feel a bit isolated in this
new environment.
These manoeuvres show the extent to which
the transportation sector is undergoing
massive changes. The railway markets are
substantial, with needs for both new and
upgraded trains and subways. Large-scale
projects, in particular in India, are whetting
appetites.

In these two sectors, composite materials
are present, although their penetration rate
is low. And yet, composites have much to
offer. The rush for electric vehicles will push
for lower weight, and in railway, weight is
also an issue - as is corrosion, or the design
freedom offered by composite materials. For
