MANUFACTURING out-of-autoclave

New toughened out-of-autoclave prepreg

After five years of development, Tencate releases a new toughened
out-of-autoclave prepreg. The porosity level of the resulting cured parts
is compatible with aeronautical specifications. Moreover, this new prepreg
has a long outlife and is easy to inspect in comparison with other toughened epoxy systems.

T

he new toughened epoxy resin
system developed by Tencate,
named TC380 epoxy, is mainly
dedicated to aircraft structures, thick
parts cured under low pressure and
honeycomb stiffened parts manufactured by automated or hand lay-up
processes. With this new product, the
company sets a new benchmark for
toughened epoxy prepreg systems.
Two cure options
This out-of-autoclave/vacuum-bagonly (OOA/VBO) system has two
cure options depending on the allowable time or the oven temperature:
- Cure A: debulk under vacuum every
four plies for fifteen minutes, apply

vacuum, hold for four hours at room
temperature, ramp-up of 0.6°C per
minute to 107°C, hold for one hour,
then 0.6°C per minute to 180°C,
hold two hours, cool to below 49°C
at 3°C per minute or less, release
vacuum (Figure 1a).
- Cure B: debulk under vacuum every
four plies for fifteen minutes, apply
vacuum, hold for four hours at room
temperature, ramp-up of 0.6°C per
minute to 107°C, hold for one hour,
then 0.6°C per minute to 135°C,
hold three hours. Demould and
post-cure free standing at 180°C for
two hours (Figure 1b).
Compression properties
According to Tencate, the TC380 system is extremely tough with an excellent balance of open-hole compression

(OHC), open-hole tension (OHT),
compression after impact (CAI), and
Mode I & II fracture toughness properties (GIC/GIIC), see Figure 2. The
system also exhibits excellent strength
retention from room temperature dry
(RTD) to elevated temperature wet
(ETW) thanks to its low moisture absorption with a service temperature of
121°C. Its dry Tg measured by dynamic mechanical analysis is 180°C.
Wing spar demonstrator
TenCate manufactured a typical industrial part using the TC380 system
- a 91-ply wing spar - and measured
the void content in various locations,
showing a high degree of consolidation under OOA/VBO processing. The maximum void content was
0.313%, i.e. extremely low.
