The epoxy leader invests in its composites business

R&D efforts in the field of
composites?

J. A. M. : I believe that

the current formulations
and systems used in the
industry can be improved
and adapt further to the
needs. We are very strong in
wind applications with our
AIRSTONE™ brand that is
already in its third generation.
AIRSTONE™ focuses on the
industry needs, reducing the
cost of blades, increasing their
size and helping to address
technical challenges. Right
now, we have launched the
LITESTONE™ product for
all composite formulations
and systems for all other
applications. We want to
associate Olin and the brand
also with success in composites
arenas other than wind.

Jean Luc Guillaume:

Composites account for about
20% of Olin's epoxy sales in
Europe. This is a significant
and growing portion of our
business in Europe. We have a
network of innovation centres
all over the world: In Europe
we have one in Baltringen in
the south of Germany (near
Ulm, Stuttgart and Munich)
and another one at CFK
Valley Stade, near Hamburg,
in the North of Germany.
They work closely together
with the Olin R&D centres in
Shanghai (China), Freeport
(Texas, USA) and Guaruja
(Sao Paulo, Brazil). Especially
in CFK Valley we are fully
dedicated to composites
testing and prototyping, while
the Baltringen site is more
concentrated on formulations
and systems. With these two
R&D centres in our region,
together with our global
research capacities, we have
the necessary capabilities -

well coordinated by our R&D
director.
Besides wind, which other
fields are you focusing on?

J. L. G. : For the moment,

we see opportunities in
automotive
suspensions,
construction
in
general,
pressure vessels and other fields
still in development. We think
there are a number of barriers
to the growth of composites
for the replacement of concrete
or metals. These barriers are
related to the performance of
composite materials and to
the speed at which composite
parts are produced, so we are
working on these two aspects.
We are working on chemistries
for mass production, on
chemistries that improve fire
retardancy - a key element in
construction, for example -
but also on chemistries that
provide improved damage
tolerance in terms of impact
mechanical stress, corrosion
resistance, fatigue resistance,
toughening, etc. We can
simulate processes through our
proprietary software thanks to
30-40 years of data collection
on exactly how a system
(epoxy plus hardener) reacts,
at what speed, under what
pressure or what temperature,
how mechanical properties are
building up, or how viscosity is
changing.

J. A. M.: In the past, we
had a corporate research and
development approach but
right now, our philosophy is
to support epoxy composite
innovation.
Composites
probably represent 90% of
our R&D effort because it is
an area where epoxy can grow
to replace other materials.
We create demand, which is
the most intelligent way to

grow. I don't mean we are
not growing by other means,
we don't exclude organic or
non-organic growth. Epoxies
in general are growing every
year, sometimes driven by
composites, or by powder
coatings, or by electrical
laminates. With epoxies, you
have a variety of industries
that provide healthy growth.
What do you think about the
construction sector?

J. A. M. : The construction

sector is definitely an area with
very high growth potential,
probably
higher
than
transportation. We are working
on systems to repair concrete
structures, whether they are
underground (wastewater or
potable water distribution
networks) or above the
ground, such as rebar, bridges
or concrete reinforcements.
We are developing a product
mix that is easy to apply,
without complicated products
and with a long pot life. We
see real potential for explosive
growth in composite rebar for
various reasons.

reductions and thus low pH
cement, so using steel rebar

area. A disruptive innovation
is necessary in composite
rebar, and that's what we are
developing. We can propose
full package solutions to
newcomers.
What about other sectors?

J. L. G. : Automotive
suspensions, mainly for trucks,
are another interesting area
with potentially explosive
growth. Here again, we
can provide full package
solutions in cooperation with
equipment
manufacturers.
