JEC World is traditionally the event where most of the new outstanding
products and technologies are released for the first time. It gives all the
exhibitors and visitors the occasion to update their benchmarks. Everyone
is seeking for solutions to produce parts faster at a lower cost. The few
examples hereafter gather some of them at every step of our value chain
through: enhanced raw materials, manufacturing equipment, high volume
production, process and production optimization, non-destructive testing,
and recycling.

Hybrid structures combining metallic and composite materials are becoming standard in transportation. Weight
saving is a key challenge for these hybrid structures, and
they demand innovative assembly methods to ensure cost
and process efficiency, high performance, and durability. L&L
Products is leveraging their deep engineering expertise in the
transportation market (auto, aerospace, and commercial vehicles)
to solve multi-material assembly challenges, and have developed
a new generation of fibre-reinforced structural epoxy film adhesives to meet manufacturers' requirements. They have been qualified by manufacturers representing several industries. Key product features are: 3-month shelf life, fast curing cycles suitable for
induction or convection curing, lap-shear up to 30 MPa on oily
steel substrates, and high-impact resistance for passenger safety.
L&L Products' unique, patented combination of one-component epoxy-based matrix and glass-fibre scrim ensures protection
from galvanic corrosion and outstanding durability. The product
line includes L-F501, a non-expanding 0.3mm film and L-F701,
a 70% expanding film for gap filling. Both products are offered
as dry-to-touch, or with a tacky surface to aid assembly. They
are available in sheets, or
custom pre-cut shapes -
ready to apply. The unique
properties of L-F501 &
L-F701 film adhesives
make them the right solution for challenging structural assemblies.

Reducing CO2 emissions in current means of transport will continue to be a central issue in research and development in the long term.
The German government's goal of having as many as one million
electric vehicles on the road by 2020 requires huge efforts. Electric
mobility, however, is not just restricted to cars, but also applies to motorbikes, commercial vehicles, aircraft manufacturing and shipbuilding.
Lightweight structures play a key role here. The Institute of Lightweight
Structures (IST) at
Chemnitz University of
Technology has been
conducting research in
this field for 20 years.
For example, the engine
mounting for the electric
motor of the VW e-Golf
was completely redeveloped at the IST as a lighter and cheaper fibre-reinforced polymer component (FRP) to replace the
traditional engine mounting made of aluminium and steel. The new design is conceived as a pressed component made of thermoPre® prepregs
to meet the specific load requirements. It offers weight savings of up to approximately 35% and cost savings of about 30%. The new engine mounting provides almost the same rigidity as the metal structure. Its higher energy absorption levels ensure stability if a crash occurs. The IST's research
work not only covers the component, but starts with the development of
new types of thermoPre® prepregs, their processing and the manufacture
of organic sheets. The complete process chain is designed to provide a
single-stage manufacturing process suitable for large-scale production.
