Multimaterial assembly - issues, problems and solutions Tab. 5: SWOT matrix for the CMT pin-thermostamping process Strengths - Texturing directly anchored in the fibre composite material - No fibre rupture - Limited heating of parts - Time saving, assembly while forming the composite part Weaknesses - Only resists to shear mode - Limited peel strength - Freezing time of the thermoplastic polymer Opportunities Fig. 5: Hybrid technology comparison minium/PA66-glass specimens both with and without adding glue. This hybrid technology was compared with individual technologies. The results are presented below (Figure 5). A number of points remain to be solved such as the use of composites under 3 mm thickness and the delamination risk around the rivet in the composite plate. What should be remembered for SPR assembly: - Can be used with both thermoplastic and thermoset composites; - Not suitable for the assembly of composite plates thicker than 3 mm; - Very fast, reliable and repeatable process; - Good fatigue behaviour. No107 August - September 2016 - Optimizing textures to integrate more fibres in the metal - Optimizing the texturing process - Combination with overmoulding Threats - Pin construction time (2.5 to 4 s/pin) - Fibre distortion due to pin insertion - Low adhesion of thermoplastic on metal parts More information: www.cetim.fr / jec composites magazine 31http://www.cetim.fr http://www.isomatex.com
