During the machining process, each sensor emits a voltage signal that is sent:
- directly to the acquisition board
through the CB-68LP terminal block in
the case of thermocouples (generally,
the K-type thermocouples generate
voltages in the tens of mV);
- to the control unit in the case of a
dynamometer;
- to the power supply-accelerometer in
the case of Kistler accelerometers.

The system is installed on a three-axis
work centre with a power to the spindle
of 13.5 kW and a maximum speed of
15,000 rpm (Figure 1).
Description of the
multisensor system
The multisensor system developed allows

in-process measurement of the three
cutting force components (X, Y, Z), the
process temperature and vibrations. It
includes the following components:
- a dynamometer (Kistler 9257BA);
- a K-type thermocouple (TERSID
HF/D-30-KK);
- Kistler accelerometers and a power
supply-accelerometer;
- a control unit (Kistler 5233 A1);
- an acquisition board (National
Instruments PCI-6034E 200 kS/s, 16bit, 16-analog-input multifunction
DAQ and CB-68LP terminal block);
- a PC (for the acquisition and processing of sensor data). Figure 2 shows
the operational logic diagramme of the
multisensor system.
In fact, the voltage signals coming from
the dynamometer, before being sent to
the CB-68LP terminal block, need to
be reduced to a voltage of ±5V and divided on the three separate connectors
corresponding to the three directions
X, Y, Z, because the PCI-6034E acquisition card can receive voltage signals in
the range of 10 volts. Similarly, the signals from the three accelerometers are
sent to the power supply-accelerometer
and then to the card. Finally, the signals
from the K-type thermocouples are
sent directly to the CB-68LP terminal
block.
The PCI-6034E acquisition board is
installed on the PC motherboard and
is connected to the CB-68LP terminal
block through a multi-pin flat cable.
The temperature, power and vibration sensors are connected to this
terminal block. The multisensor data
acquisition (DAQ) system described
is interfaced with a personal computer
with a LabVIEW application installed
for the acquisition of the temperature,
