2015, a year rich in
new developments
There clearly has been a lot of activity in our industry this year. Its
future in terms of volume has never been so rosy in the context of
our obligations for CO2 emission reduction, with the automotive
sector in the lead. It wasn't easy to make choices, but we have
oriented our analysis towards "surprise" events - of which there
should be any number in store for us over the next five years - and
carbon in automotive.
W
e have chosen to omit predictable capacity increases, such as
those by Toray in response to
aerospace ramp-ups.
A "hot" summer
Summer 2015 was especially rich in new
developments. These included some very
unexpected ones, in particular in late July.
To start with, Lockheed Martin entered
into a conclusive agreement to acquire
American helicopter manufacturer Sikorsky Aircraft from United Technologies
Corporation (UTC) for US$7.1 billion.
Given the general knowledge that UTC
wanted to focus on other activities, other
companies abroad were also in the running - but since the U.S. Defense Department is one of Sikorsky's major customers, Lockheed Martin was probably an
obvious choice.
Then, Avcorp purchased Hitco Carbon
Composites Inc., an SGL group company
since 1997 that focuses mainly on aerospace (along with a few automotive activities). This was followed by GKN's acquisition of Fokker Technologies from the Arle
Capital group for €706 million, thereby

reinforcing GKN's position as a major Tier
1 aerospace company and providing it with
some solid thermoplastic expertise.
On 29 July, something almost totally
unexpected happened: Solvay acquired
Cytec in a "friendly" takeover (see below
for more details), enabling the company,
already in the top tier of the thermoplastics performance pyramid, to penetrate
further into the aerospace market. The
takeover also gives Solvay an internal
source of carbon fibre and new thermoset
and adhesive skills.
In late August, the aerospace, defence
and energy engineering group Meggitt
purchased aerospace specialist Cobham's
composite business for US$200 million.
Located in the United States and the
United Kingdom, these activities will be
integrated into Meggitt's Polymers & Composites division. Then, in late September,
Meggitt consolidated the division with the
purchase of EDAC's Composites division
from the Greenbriar Equity group (and
other shareholders) for US$340 million.
EDAC's production sites in the U.S. and
Mexico will give Meggitt a stronger global
position in aerospace composites for engine components, secondary structures, ice
protection and radomes.
