Polymer Group Inc to be
renamed Avintiv
PGI announces that it has begun to
rollout a new corporate brand and
identity that align with its commitment to developing and delivering
high-impact solutions for its customers. As a first step in this process, PGI
Specialty Materials has selected Avintiv as
its new company name. The company will
register similar name changes for many of
its operating subsidiaries and will roll out a
new branding and identity concept in the
coming weeks and months.

IACMI is officially open for business
Hundreds of composites experts from industry, government and academia gathered
in Knoxville for the launch of the Institute
for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation, or IACMI. A signing
ceremony between the U.S. Department
of Energy and IACMI representatives
marked the official start of business for the
institute, which was announced in January
by President Barack Obama.

IACMI will provide open access to a
network of existing shared research,
development and demonstration facilities of premier universities and national
laboratories located near targeted industry
partners. It will offer a rich network of
advanced composite resources through
partners in Colorado, Indiana, Kentucky,
Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee.

A320 jetliner starts commercial
flights with ceramic matrix composite
exhaust cone
The ceramic matrix composite (CMC)
exhaust cone designed by Safran company
Herakles made its first commercial flight
on a CFM56-5B engine powering an Air
France Airbus A320 jetliner. This is the

first time that a CMC part has flown on a
jetliner in commercial service.
After carrying out its initial tests on an
A320 in 2012, the ceramic matrix composite exhaust cone demonstrator was
certified on April 2015 by the European
Aviation Safety Agency (AESA) for use on
commercial flights.

Vision Systems opens a production plant dedicated to composite
In order to respond to the growing
need of its customers in terms of
composite products integration, the company is setting up a production unit that
will specifically produce composite parts.
The plant will come and reinforce existing
industrial facilities from drape forming to
machining, thus strengthening the control
of the product developments from beginning to end. Vision Systems, an international system supplier for the aeronautics,
automotive and marine markets, already
masters different industrial processes
including resin transfer molding, thermocompression, infusion, thermoforming and
drape forming. This production knowhow, in addition to that of mechanics and
electronics, enables Vision Systems to offer
complete functional systems with breakthrough features, most particularly solar
protection solutions, helicopter doors and
windows and cyclic sticks.

Purdue University breaks ground
on $50 million project
The Indiana Manufacturing Institute is
a part of a $50 million project in which
Purdue University researchers will advance
research of composite materials manufacturing to develop more energy-efficient
technologies.
The 62,000-square-foot institute, which
is slated to open in mid-2016, is part of a
$259 million U.S. Department of Energy
