I research magnetic materials for high
frequencies to perform electromagnetic
characterizations and develop electromagnetic wave absorbers as a chemical
and materials engineer. I focus on innovative materials for microwave frequency devices, such as filters, paint, sheets,
and electronic warfare systems that
camouflage potential targets from radar
detection. I have a strong background
in material science and engineering, including processing and characterization
of ceramic/polymer/composite materials. I also have conducted scientific
studies for understanding and developing materials that lead to the benefit of
science and emerging technologies. In
addition, I have studied structures and
properties of materials, such as magnetic
ceramics and composites. Beyond this,
I have prepared reports of materials
studies for other scientists and guided
technical staff engaged in developing
materials for specific use in future products and devices.
JCM: Are the mechanical properties of
composite materials the sole driver of
their expansion in the aerospace industry?

A. G. : I believe that the mechanical
properties of composites are not the
sole driver of expansion in the aerospace
industry. Novel integrated multifunctional capabilities largely based on
tuning electrical and thermal conductivities, such as damage/state sensing,
energy-efficient manufacturing (out-ofoven curing), and other functionalities,
are important drivers for composite
material expansion in the aerospace
industry.
JCM: What is your funding structure
(distribution of public/private funds)?

A. G. : My own research is supported
by the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development
(CNPq) in Brazil, the Aeronautics and
Space Institute (IAE), Brazil, and MIT's

NECST Consortium.
JCM: What is the impact of the global
economic crisis on the budgets allocated
to research in the USA? In this context,
how can you defend basic research into
composite materials?

A. G. : I do not know much about
the exact effect of the global economic
crisis on allocated research budgets in
the USA. However, I know that basic
research in composites has the potential
to reduce the mass of future transportation systems, thereby improving vehicle
efficiencies, and generating energy as
well as cost savings during their operational life.
JCM: Your work is oriented toward the
understanding of reinforcement mechanisms and relates to composite/CNT
hybrid structures. Could you tell us a little
more about your current projects and the
industrial potential they represent?

A. G. : Our group, the necstlab, has
shown that for polymer matrix composites (PMCs), many improvements are
possible including mechanical reinforcement to derive enhanced strength and
toughness. My work focuses on mechanical and multifunctional enhancement
of high-temperature materials, which
are critical areas for improving system
efficiencies in the aerospace industry.
JCM: Material sciences research is currently carried out in a cross-disciplinary
fashion. What is your day-to-day experience of what this cross-disciplinary approach brings to your research?

JCM: What impact do simulation and
virtual imaging technologies have on your
research? Do they make it possible to "go
live" with production more quickly?

A. G. : Simulation and virtual imaging
technologies have a high impact on my
research because they enable predictions of the material's electromagnetic
behaviour and save experimental time
and costs. In principle, simulation
approaches allow for the study of a
system of any complexity. However, it
is important to consider that certain
numerical analyses require enormous
computational resources that are costly
and might not always be available.
JCM: How do you envisage the advanced
materials of tomorrow? What is your Holy
Grail as a scientist?

A. G. : The advanced materials of
tomorrow are true multifunctional
materials: they fulfil more than just a
single structural function, and integrate
lightweight sensors, EMC, EMI shielding, thermal barriers, energy harvesting,
and noise reduction systems. My Holy
Grail as a scientist is to see my advanced
ceramic composite material being used
and applied in different areas. n

Focus
The NECST Consortium is a group that Prof Wardle formed comprised of aerospace
industry players that supports research in necstlab towards their nanoengineered composites
interests. Necstlab's focus is to improve the performance of advanced aerospace materials/
structures through strategic use of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) combined with traditional advanced
composites to form hybrid architectures. Two primary 3D nano-engineered architectures are being
explored and developed, both polymer-matrix based, and a third is under development. The fabrication strategy involves novel synthesis of high-quality, long (several millimeters), aligned CNTs
placed strategically within existing advanced composite systems. Results have demonstrated that
high-quality CNT/traditional hybrid composite laminates can be architected and fabricated at rates
and scales that can be used in full-scale aerospace structures.
