producer, with 48% of total production. Led by the
United States, North America is now relegated to second
place, with 36% of total production, although it was the
undisputed leader for a long time. Europe takes third
place with only 9% of production, followed by Japan
(3%), India (2%), Southeast Asia (1%), and South
America (1%).
Conclusion
Although there are still a few technical bugs (including
the fouling of injection moulds that occurs faster than
with other materials), natural fibres should be facing
a rosy future. Several value chains have managed to
organize in order to address the qualms user industries
have about variations in fibre quality and inventory.
Production volumes are on the rise. Even the aerospace
sector (e.g. with the cooperation between Zodiac
Seats UK and Fimalin) is proposing natural fibre based
demonstrators. After a number of difficult years trying
to gain acceptance, players in the natural fibre industry
now have reason to be optimistic. n
