Strategic project for a cost-effective
carbon fibre supply chain
Some manufacturers worked together with the French automotive sector platform (PFA) and the French chemical industry union (UIC) to launch
Force, a project to develop a supply chain for reasonably priced carbon
fibre. They turned over the project management to the Jules Verne Institut
de Recherche Technologique.

W

eight reduction is a
key factor in reducing CO2 emissions in
the transportation sector. One
of the most promising means of
reducing weight on a large scale
is the use of new materials, and
more particularly composites, in
structural parts. The performance
of these composites is linked in
part to the use of carbon fibre
reinforcements, which currently
have the disadvantage of being
expensive.

A strategic issue
for France
For this reason, international
companies worldwide are working to set up carbon-fibre supply
chains at controlled cost. While
the automotive industry is one
of the leading target markets in
terms of volume, the spin-off
from these investments can be
applied to a number of other
sectors, like aerospace, energy,
defence, sports & leisure, or civil
engineering.
Today, with its network of internationally recognized, innovative
companies that have the support

of high-tech research laboratories
and universities, France has all the
expertise needed to implement
a supply chain for reasonably
priced carbon fibre.

economies of scale in connection with the range of potential
applications in the automotive
industry.

A technical and
economic challenge

A wide-reaching collaborative project between
user manufacturers and
producers

Within the framework of the
French automotive sector platform (PFA), Faurecia initiated
a project called Force, for Fibre
Optimisée et Réaliste de Carbone
Economique (realistic, optimized
carbon fibre at reasonable cost).
The aim of the project is to
achieve a more reasonably priced
carbon fibre at under €8/kg, with
performance suited for the applications under consideration.
A major factor in cost-price
structure is polyacrylonitrile (or
PAN), the benchmark precursor
currently in use. PAN is far too
expensive for the requirements
of the automotive industry. It
should be possible to reduce the
cost considerably by using alternative materials, such as biomass
by-products or polyolefins, and
by optimizing the conversion
processes.
Optimizing or even eliminating
some steps in the manufacturing
process constitute other opportunities to reduce the cost, in

Meeting this challenge requires
three key types of expertise:
from user manufacturers, from
producers, and from universities.
This means getting everyone
involved in a coordinated crossdisciplinary effort, including the
chemical industry, which is an
indispensable participant for the
success of the project.
For this reason, a group of manufacturers (Arkema, Chomarat,
Faurecia, Kermel, Mersen, Plastic
Omnium, PSA Peugeot Citroën,
Renault, Rhovyl, and Total)
decided to work together with
the French automotive sector
platform (PFA) and the French
chemical industry union (UIC)
to launch the Force project in
October 2014, turning over the
project management to the Jules
Verne Institut de Recherche
Technologique (IRT JV). This
partnership also receives support
from CANOE, the Aquitaine

Region's composite technological
platform.

A three-phase approach
The Force project will be
structured around three phases,
coordinated by the IRT JV.
The objective of Phase I, which
consists in investigative studies,
is to establish the roadmap for
the project, reinforce the state
of the art, and identify the most
advantageous technico-economic
scenarios. It will serve to validate
the project content and lead into
Phase II, which will be dedicated
to validating the scenarios on
laboratory production lines. The
objective of Phase III, the industrial validation phase that follows,
will be to set up pre-industrial
production lines.
The end objective is to prepare
the next generation of carbon
fibre and give rise to a French
supply chain for reasonably
priced carbon fibre.
The 14 founding members of the
Force project are PFA, IRT Jules
Verne, UIC, Faurecia, Arkema,
CANOE, Chomarat, Kermel,
Mersen, Plastic Omnium, PSA
Peugeot Citroën, Renault, Rhovyl and Total. n
