Their low weight enables larger parts to
be constructed without secondary support and, at the same time, significantly
reduces the supporting structure. However, this requires that the FRP solution
is considered at the preliminary design
stage of a building project to secure all
the inherent benefits that FRP solutions
may bring to a supporting structure.

Finally, emphasis should be given to the
fact that FRP composites - a combination of several raw materials with a wide
range of properties - can be tailor-made
to meet specific criteria related to the feasibility of a construction project. Among
those, FRP composites perform extremely well in terms of architectural design,
structural design, building physics,
weather-tightness, fire protection, manufacturing and constructability, access and
maintenance, budget costs, supply chain
and environmental sustainability.
FRP composites use different core materials such as PET, PVC, PUR/PIR and
XPS. Among those, PET-cored sandwich
panels seem to be the 'most advanced'
way to tackle today's innovative architectural design with integrated features.

PET cored sandwich panels:
'The fully integrated solution'
In principle, a sandwich consists of two
skins, or facings, with a core material
in between. Basically, it works like an
I-beam. The skins take up the normal
stresses and give the structure a hardwearing surface. The core material absorbs the shear forces generated by loads,
distributing them over a larger area.
Among the range of cores available in the
market, PET foam cores could become
the ideal choice for architectural applications. In addition to a unique combination of thermal insulation properties
and excellent mechanical characteristics,
PET foam cores demonstrate excellent
compatibility with most resin types and
lamination processes (withstanding high
processing temperature up to 150°C,
short-term up to 180°C), opening the
door to a wide spectrum of applications.
Another key benefit for the construction
market is the thermoplastic nature of
PET foams, which enables them to be
easily thermoformed and shaped into the
most complex designs (Figure 3).
Last, but not least, PET foam cores significantly improve the ecological footprint
of a building. The whole lifespan of PET
foam cores, from production to recycling,
is energy saving and environmentally
friendly. This is valid for all PET foams in
the market.

Armacell, the world leader in the market
for flexible technical insulation materials,
did not stop there and developed a PET
foam core that is manufactured from
post-consumer recycled PET (called
ArmaFORM PET GR). Their unique
production process allows re-using the
waste stream which normally ends up in
an incinerator or a landfill. With ArmaFORM PET GR, the 'cradle-to-cradle'
principle is perfectly implemented: the
recyclable foam core is manufactured
from a recycled raw material.

Fire properties
Although it is often doubted, FRP has
very good fire properties and meets the
most stringent standards. As a tailormade combination, FRP sandwich panels
are often constructed and designed with
fire-retardant resins and combined with
intumescent coatings, which create a
char on the exposed surface, lowering the
substrate burn rate.
The company recently developed Armaflex Ultima, a self-adhesive sheet made of
flexible elastomeric foam. Being B-s2-d0
as per SBI (EN13823) and achieving
