To prove the cost efficiency of the new
concept in comparison to the state of the art,
the manufacturing costs of several demons-

concepts, using
the process and
cost modelling
approach described above [3].
A car hood comprising tapes
joined with
the basic structure in an x-shape in order to
reach the required stiffness against vibration
and oscillation, as well as three metal angles
connected to the hood through tapes as
connection points to the vehicle frame, was
chosen. The study clearly reveals the possibility of enhancing cost efficiency by using the
new concept. Figure 9 shows the cost report
for an intended production of 60,000 parts
per year for the new concept as well as for a
concept utilizing only the thermoforming
process. Manufacturing the car hood with
the new concept makes it necessary to invest
in equipment for both the thermoforming
process and the tape placement process.
However, the impact of the possible simultaneous execution of the two independent
processes (thermoforming and tape
placement) during serial production leads to
a relatively low effective cycle time (results
from the number of parts actually finished in
a certain time span), compared to the pure
thermoforming concept which uses only
the thermal moulding tool. This also results
from the reduced thickness of the organic
sheet used for the new concepts, which
goes along with shorter heating and cooling
times. Therefore, the fixed costs for both
concepts are almost equal, since the value
of 60,000 parts per year can be produced
with only one set of equipment for the new
concept, while the pure thermoforming
concept requires two sets since its capacity
limit is lower. However, labour costs are not
affected by the possibilities of parallelization,
according to the assumptions that every process affords the supervision by an employee.
Thus, labour costs are 20% to 40% higher
for the new concept, since it comprises two
independent processes. The main costcausing element remains the material, as is
often the case when manufacturing FRPC
components. It could be shown that material
costs are almost cut by half through the
