Hydrogen generation
Researchers operating in the field of alternative and renewable energy have been focusing on gaseous hydrogen for many years. Its main advantage is that it burns with a strongly exothermic flame (and therefore with a high energy content), forming water as the only reaction product. Hydrogen generation using water electrolytic scission is a process with a very poor energy balance, and therefore of very little interest. In fact, the

The materials are researched and developed inhouse and then exported worldwide through its sales network for use in the electric, electronic, industrial and automotive sectors.

thermodynamics of the water molecule scission reaction (approx. 5 kWh for each m3 H2 generated) require much more energy than what is made available during hydrogen combustion. However, the use of water electrolysis as a tool to store the otherwise-unused excess energy produced is a very interesting opportunity. Gaseous hydrogen, for example, is now being considered as a simple and efficient way to store excess electricity produced by thermoelectric and nuclear power plants or off-grid photovoltaic systems at night, or by alternative renewable sources such as wind energy and geothermics.

alkaline aqueous solution, and of native gaseous species of oxygen and hydrogen which, in turn, are quite problematic for metals. Besides chemical attack, the reactor must be resistant to pressure and to temperatures over 50°C, and it must guarantee total safety and reliability over time because of the presence of corrosive electrolytes, dangerous gaseous species and strong electric currents. Any structural failure may have severe consequences on the device’s operation. The reactor is made of special plastics that confer the following properties (while meeting the tightest dimensional tolerances): - maximum chemical resistance, - creep and fatigue resistance, - good mechanical and thermal performance, - ageing resistance, - maximum dimensional stability. An optimum price/ performance ratio is the first requirement for the mass marketing of reactors. There are great opportunities for special injection-moulding technopolymers in this field, and Lati has already developed products that have been widely tested and approved by manufacturers (see Table 2 for mechanical properties): - Larton G/40 I6 and I9: special

formulation of 40% glass-fibrereinforced PPS, matrix modified to ensure remarkably improved ultimate elongation and impact strength. This product benefits from the excellent chemical inertia of PPS without the intrinsic fragility and low flexibility of its compounds. - Larton G/40 I6 is also designed to ensure the best moulding fluidity so as to optimize the filling of thin cavities without exceeding moulding conditions and risking material damage. Its excellent mechanical resistance is combined with high reliability over time. It is especially resistant to permanent deformation caused by the constant loads developed by the clamping forces applied on the battery-cell pack. - Lasulf: in this more traditional solution, the reactors made of glass-reinforced (or nonreinforced) PSU ensure excellent chemical resistance and dimensional stability over time, without the risk of electrolyte and gas leakages. The higher cost of this polymer suggests the use of Lasulf in industrial applications rather than for general purposes.
