This paper presents the design process, the structural analysis and the characteristics of a hollow, cylindrical monopost entirely made of composites. This translucent structure is 40 m high, for an external diameter of 1.60 m and an average wall thickness of 11 mm. The material is a polymer made of vinylester resin reinforced with glass fibre (GFRP). The manufacturing process is filament winding. Due to its geographical situation, the structure has to withstand wind speeds above 180 km/h and the elastic modulus of the material should not exceed 25 GPa.

be able to access the interior of the monopost to install lighting and telecommunication systems and to perform any necessary operations. At the same time, the material should not interfere with signals. To meet these determining factors, a variety of different structural solutions combined with several types of materials were considered. The following decisions had to be made: - Finding a lightweight and translucent material with a wellfinished surface and low maintenance that would not interfere with the signals, - Defining a transverse section that could maximize the internal surface, - Finding a reliable, fast and low-cost manufacturing technique, - Designing stiff and strong elements to support external loads, - Designing special accessories to support the installation/operation of interior devices later on.

fter considering and developing different types of approaches and analyses (linear, non-linear and buckling), the team reached an optimum solution and structural strength for the monopost located in Caudete, which is near Albacete in Spain Fig. 1A & 1B.

Preliminary design factors

The monopost has several singular features in terms of geometry, structural behaviour, material type and manufacturing technology.

The customer had a number of prerequisites. The monopost had to be a lightweight structure, with simple, clean shapes and translucent parts. The customer wanted to

Description of structural elements
The structure is a hollow cylinder with a continuous transverse section. Its visible height is 40 m and its external diameter 1.60 m, resulting in a slenderness ratio of 25. It was initially built in four 10.3-m-long sections due to the assembly jig and the manufacturing technology. An optimized road transport system made it possible to preassemble the sections at the manufacturing site to obtain two sections 20.6 m in length (Figure 2).
