A new family of high performance DCPD (dicyclopentadiene) based formulations have been developed by Telene SAS. The Telene® 1800 series overcome sensitivity to water and moisture, enabling new processes in addition to classical RIM (Reaction Injection Moulding). These new possibilities include  centrifugal, hand or machine casting, S/R-RIM, RTM, infusion, spraying, filament winding, pultrusion, rotational moulding…and allow the use of long- and short- fiber reinforcement, foaming agents and many types of fillers. Success with high filler content has already been achieved, leading to UL 94 V-0 flammability rating. The new grades are also being used as corrosion-resistant glue for pDCPD parts exposed to harsh chemical environments where monobloc pDCPD parts, greater than 6 m long, have been constructed. Grades in the Telene® 1800 series are now used in prototyping with “actual material” models at lower tool cost and more favorable HSE conditions, allowing true field tests and a shorter time-to-market. It also opens opportunities for small series production. Exciting prospects have been identified in E&E applications offering high yield through low viscosity systems yet short cycle times, on top of excellent intrinsic electrical properties. Telene® 1800 series are currently being evaluated for several new markets including offshore applications, tidal power, construction and composites, where combination of low viscosity and highly adjustable curing time is of prime interest. www.telene.com

The Galtzaberde innovation is the first styrene-free polyester liner to be produced in Europe. Literally translated from Basque, galtzaberde means “green sock”. The innovation is a big first for the trenchless sewer rehabilitation sector, and a huge step forward for the health of both the installers and the local inhabitants. Galtzaberde is the result of extensive laboratory testing on a non-toxic styrene- and odour-free polyester resin. EBL Polyester, a manufacturer established in France’s Basque region, specializes in plastics processing. EBL has a firm commitment to finding non-polluting solutions and is currently working on various large-scale projects to incorporate bio-sourced or biodegradable materials into all of its thermoforming, injection and composite production.

Toho Tenax is developing a range of forward-integrated carbon-fibre-based products. The most advanced of these products are Tenax®-based thermoplastics. A new production line for Tenax® TPUD prepreg (thermoplastic unidirectional) is currently being installed at the German production site in Oberbruch. This new advanced line builds on Toho Tenax group’s twenty years of experience in thermoplastic prepreg production. It will be the first commercial TPUD line installed in Europe. Production should start in summer 2011.

In many different industries, especially the automotive industry, the RTM process seems to be the preferred solution for series production of fibrereinforced plastics, replacing metal parts and improving the strength/weight ratio of the final part. Sika has developed Biresin CR170 and CR135, two systems that are optimized for the RTM process. The choice depends on part requirements: Biresin CR170 for a high Tg value (>170°C) and a very short cycle time (<5 minutes depending on the process), and Biresin CR135 for class-A surfaces. Biresin CR170 is a system with two hardeners. The first one provides a very high Tg value (>170°C) and a cycle time of approximately 10-15 minutes, depending on the process parameters. The second hardener has been specially developed to give very short cycle times. Tests showed that a cycle time of <5 minutes and a Tg of >140°C can be achieved with optimized process parameters. Therefore, this combination is highly suitable for series production of up to 100,000 parts a year. Both hardener combinations are suitable for cathodic electrophoretic coating processes, where temperatures approach 180°C for up to 45 minutes. The Biresin CR135 / Biresin CH135-4 epoxy system has very low shrinkage and can therefore provide high-quality (class A) surfaces in composite parts. A Tg value of >150°C and a cycle time of 10-15 minutes are possible.

Tenax® TPUD is reinforced with a specialised carbon fibre with tailored sizing for hightemperature thermoplastic applications. The carbon-fibre-reinforced thermoplastic tape will be available in a wide range of widths (6.35 to 304.8 mm). Toho Tenax has also developed a new range of thermoplastic consolidated-laminate materials (Tenax® TPCL) in partnership with Porcher Industries, France. The laminates are formed by consolidating several layers of woven carbon fibre coated with a thermoplastic polymer. These laminates can be used to create pressformed components. The new Tenax® thermoplastic materials have already been selected for a variety of aerospace development and commercial programmes.
