Toray signs agreement with Airbus to supply carbon fibre prepreg On 10 May 2010, Toray announced that it has signed a long-term basic supply agreement with the aerospace and defence company EADS to supply carbon fibre prepreg for aircraft applications, primarily for Airbus S.A.S. This 15-year agreement will last through to 2025. www.toray.com Cooperation agreement between KraussMaffei and Dieffenbacher The Reaction Process Machinery division of KraussMaffei concluded a cooperation agreement with Dieffenbacher on 15 April 2010 for the worldwide sale of machines used in the high-pressure resin transfer moulding process (HP-RTM machines). By signing this agreement, the two companies have the rapidly burgeoning market for CFRP components in the automotive industry in their sights. www.kraussmaffei.com Metyx Composites names Scott Bader exclusive distributor in UK and Ireland Metyx Composites just announced the addition of 23 countries to its global distribution network. On 1 May 2010, Scott Bader® became the exclusive distributor of Metyx Composites products in the United Kingdom and Ireland. This new agreement follows the January 2010 announcement making Scott Bader the exclusive distributor in France. www.metyx.com Redelease consolidates its partnership with AkzoNobel Redelease is the new official distributor of AkzoNobel organic peroxides in São Paulo, a State that has the largest number of Brazilian companies consuming these products. With two plants in the capital and one under construction in the region of Campinas, Redelease will service the São Paulo's market together with VI Fiberglass, a company headquartered in Guarulhos. www.redelease.com.br ABMACO and IPT start recycling activities The Brazilian Composite Materials Association (ABMACO) and the Institute for Technological Research (IPT) have entered into an agreement to start recycling activities under ABMACO’s National Recycling Programme. The project aims to develop tools to ensure the reuse of composite waste in the production process. The Brazilian composite sector generates approximately 18,000 metric tons of waste every year, representing an expenditure of US$66 million for the disposal at Class 2 landfills. In 2009, 182,000 metric tons of the material were produced, totalling US$1.24 billion in revenue. www.abmaco.org.br

Ashland takes control of Ara Química Ashland Performance Materials, a division of Ashland Inc., recently took full control of the Brazilian company Ara Química. The deal concluded the joint venture set up in 1999 when Ara Ashland was created. www.ashland.com

Development
PPG restarts fibre glass furnace in North Carolina PPG Industries’ fibre glass business announced on 12 May 2010 that it has restarted a furnace at its facility in Shelby, N.C. The restart supports market demand, specifically in the area of automotive, wind energy, and oil & gas pipe applications. Restarting the furnace will increase the current annual capacity by about 17,000 metric tons. An additional 34 employees will support the restart, some of which were recalled from layoffs. www.ppg.com Premium Aerotec starts production of panels for new Airbus A350 XWB Premium Aerotec is preparing for series production of the new A350 XWB longhaul aircraft. Production of the first panels made of carbon fibre composites (CFCs) for the A350 XWB started at the Nordenham site in June.

Opening
Kemrock Industries commissions India's first carbon fibre facility India’s first carbon fibre manufacturing facility was commissioned in Vadodara, Gujarat on 9 May 2010. This fully integrated plant, which includes polymerization, wet spinning and carbonization units, has been set up with technology know-how from the CSIR-National Aerospace Laboratory, Bengaluru, with an initial capacity of 400 metric tons per annum. Kemrock Industries will manufacture carbon fibre composites and prepregs in Vadodara. www.kemrock.com Hobas opens top-level research centre The international pipe producer Hobas has just opened the world’s most modern research centre for glass-fibrereinforced plastic (GRP) pipe systems in Wietersdorf, Austria. After a year of construction and an investment of 1.1 million euros, the Hobas TechCenter was inaugurated on 30 April 2010. www.hobas.com

The Augsburg site will follow suit shortly afterwards. Premium AEROTEC is the world’s largest supplier of fuselage structures for the A350 XWB. Its total investment in this future generation of aircraft amounts to around € 360 million, as the company announced in connection with a press meeting held in the run-up to the ILA Berlin Air Show 2010. www.premium-aerotec.com
