Optimism was tangible at JEC Composites Show 2010
In a draft economic forecast document that was made public on April 21, the IMF estimated that global economic growth could reach 4.1% in 2010, as opposed to the initially forecast 3.9%, essentially driven by the two figure growth of China. This announcement arrives hot on the heels of the declarations of the Chinese government which, in March, reviewed upwardly its growth forecasts for 2010. The IMF is, however, downscaling its forecasts for growth in the euro zone, from 0.9% as initially forecast for 2010 to 0.8%, subsequently rising to 1.5% in 2011. The forecasts of the IMF and of other economic institutions demonstrate that growth is back, and not just for 2010: the outlook is also promising for 2011. With a horizon as clear as this, the investments are sure to follow. This new mood of optimism was perceptible at this year's JEC Composites Show, held in Paris on 13-14-15 April, and which once again brought together all the key players from the composites industry. It is as if the manufacturers in the sector had anticipated these healthy forecasts, such was the plethora of announcements and innovations unveiled during the three days of the trade show. The entire value chain was concerned, and in every single sector there was something new to contemplate. By way of illustration, we have collected approximately 30% more press releases than last year. The number of applications for the Innovation programme was also up. It is a sign that the recovery is well and truly there, even if it is irregularly distributed across markets and geographical zones. When you scrutinise all these announcements a little more closely, it becomes apparent that there is a good balance between the various segments of the value chain. Raw materials, resins and reinforcements all feature, along with equipment and services, with the focus globally on the environment and on the industrialisation of processes. The environment has been a recurrent subject for several years, and is now firmly established in all development approaches. Process industrialisation is a more recent concern, and ties in with the logic of productivity and quality, since it is only by means of production process automation that costs can be reduced and flawless reproducibility be guaranteed. The quest for performance enhancement in general also needs to be underlined, and considered in conjunction with the sophistication of the manufactured parts and of the applications as a whole.
