USERS’ PLATFORM Application Mass-produced zero-emission vehicle In late July 2008, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. delivered its first FCX Clarity in Santa Monica, California, USA. Over the next three years, about 200 of its customers both in Japan and (mostly) in the suburbs of Los Angeles will be lucky enough to try out this new vehicle, which operates on a hydrogen fuel cell. onda certainly won’t make any money from its FCX Clarity trial operation, but remember that the world-famous hybrid Toyota Prius started its adventure in much the same way. H Given that the hydrogen used as fuel has a low energy density per volume, as much hydrogen as possible must be available to ensure maximal driving range. For optimal packaging, however, the fuel tanks must take up as little space as possible. The FCX’s 350-bar, corrosion-resistant and high-pressure hydrogen tanks are made of three layers: an aluminium liner, a carbon-fibre layer, and a glass-fibre layer (Fig. 2). Significant advances Significant improvements on Honda's earlier FCX include a 25% increase in combined fuel economy to 115 km/kg-H2, or 74 mpg GGE (miles per gasoline gallon equivalent),* and a greater than 30% increase in driving range up to 450km*. The FCX Clarity is a nextgeneration, hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicle (Fig. 1). Propelled by an electric motor that runs on electricity generated in the fuel cell, the vehicle's only emission is water, and its fuel efficiency is three times that of a modern gasolinepowered automobile. The Honda FC Stack-equipped FCX, which is capable of starting at subfreezing temperatures, is the world’s first fuel-cell vehicle to be certified for use on public roads by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). An innovative hydrogen tank Unlike its competitors, which opted for 700-bar high-pressure tanks, Honda decided on a pressure of 350 bar, deeming that pressure to be easier to achieve in small hydrogen production facilities, especially individually owned ones. That pressure also places fewer constraints on the tanks. Whereas the 2005 FCX carries two hydrogen tanks, the FCX Clarity has only one. This creates more space for the rear seats and trunk. The shut-off valve, regulator, pressure sensor and other components in the refuelling and supply system were integrated into a single intank module, reducing the number of parts by 74%. Tank capacity is greater, installation space efficiency is 24% better, and vehicle range is increased. The tank provides the FCX Clarity with a 171-litre fuel capacity. This large capacity combined with improved fuel consumption contributes to the car’s 430 km* driving range. Fuelling time at a high-pressure fuelling station is only three minutes, for a level of convenience comparable to that of a gasoline-powered vehicle. Conclusion Honda wants to help preserve a healthy environment to ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy mobility. Fuel-cell vehicles, which emit no CO2 or other harmful emissions, may be the key. Honda became the world’s first carmaker to put a fuel-cell car on the road with regular customers in 2002.
