FEATURE “Distribution” Focus Mechemco is a leading manufacturer of unsaturated polyester resin, under the brand name Mechster Resins, in western India. While the resin-manufacturing activity is highly unorganized in India, with more than 50 UPresin manufacturing units, Mechemco enjoys a prominent position with an overall market share of about 15% in India and about 30% in specialty resins. Keeping up with such demand is a herculean task. These can certainly be identified as the growing pains we must go through – similar to those faced by other economies. However, as the pace of technology development over the past decade has been phenomenal and to keep up with advancements and bring them to India in due course, the Indian composites industry may need to compress the time frame quite dramatically. With the current emphasis on the infrastructure and energy sector, the Indian composites industry is poised to move into higher gear to capitalize on untapped markets and become an international hub for outsourcing. JCM: What is the difference between working abroad or in India? C. S.: Distribution in India is quite a complex and challenging proposition, as there is a lack of awareness of the available technologies and benefits one can derive from the use of specialty products such as raw materials, accessories and processing tools. It is therefore most important for a distribution company to be technically sound to support the needs of all types of customers and to guide them carefully to the correct usages, as well as efficient implementation of new ideas/technologies including use of specialty products. It is important for us to be able to demonstrate these, either on the customer’s premises or at a group demonstration, to provide all the necessary insight into the pros and cons of a new product/process/accessory. Thus, it is important for a distribution company to remain fully engaged with customers in order to be updated and upgraded from time to time. looking for a better available option for their processes or products. Our relationship with our customers is therefore beyond the buyer-seller relationship. In fact, we are a close business partner for them, constantly providing the necessary impetus to their growth, both technologically and business-wise. As a distribution company, we enjoy a good relationship with our customers, helping them right from conceptualization of their products/process through to delivery of the finished product to the end user. We could achieve this by providing confidence and gaining trust by supporting their growth. JCM: Do you ever get involved in specific projects that require your skills? C. S.: Most of the time, our expertise as materials people and our ability to identify suitable materials/accessories and processes (learned through experience in the field coupled with theoretical knowledge) comes in handy when a new project is initiated. It is very important for a customer to go through the process of acclimating technology to their workshop environment, and this requires our complete support and efforts to make it successful. We have been involved in many such efforts, from a very small workshop to a highly sophisticated production-pipe manufacturing plant.
