Such materials also have to be extremely lightweight and fulfil the highest mechanical requirements. AXEL BRAUN, PRODUCT MANAGEMENT, GURIT AEROSPACE AND RAIL urit’s PB1000 prepreg resin is a novel modified benzoxazine resin that satisfies the most recent environmental standards, such as AIRBUS AP2091. Its VOC-free rapid curing process generates a perfectly void- and porous-free surface. PB1000 fully complies with demanding international aerospace fire protection regulations and is designed to replace existing phenolic systems (Fig. 1). G During the past decades, fibre-reinforced plastics with a phenolic resin matrix were the only materials that could meet such requirements. Phenolic resins have great fire-resistance and cost advantages but their environmental properties and processability are very problematic. Uncured phenolic resins incorporate highly toxic substances: phenol and formaldehyde. During the curing process, formaldehyde and water are split off, causing surface defects and releasing toxic formaldehyde. The search for alternative materials was of little success because these materials were either too expensive or unable to meet fire safety requirements. The materials used to produce interior components for aircraft and other mass transportation vehicles are always selected – in addition to their mechanical properties – according to the fire protection requirements in force. Since the introduction of fireresistant materials in aircraft, these requirements have been constantly increasing. Materials for aircraft interiors must also be extremely lightweight while fulfilling the highest mechanical requirements. They have to comply with all valid fire safety requirements in terms of flammability, smoke density, gas toxicity and heat-release. In addition, aircraft interior materials have a completely different price target than materials for structural components. Benzoxazine offers an excellent alternative to phenolic resins as it has many of their most beneficial properties whilst eliminating their negative features. Benzoxazine has excellent fire properties, low material costs and excellent toxicological safety. Its addition cross-linking mechanism does not create any water, thus eliminating voiding issues. Benzoxazine is basically the same chemical class as phenolic resin and it can be found as an intermediate in the curing process of certain phenolic resins. Its toxicological advantage is that no formaldehyde is required for curing, and no phenolic residue is left in the formulations.
