BUSINESS Niche Market: Luggage Beautiful structural balance The G3 carbon-fibre briefcase. When it comes to design, the use of carbon often conveys the impression of luxury, and the G3 carbon-fibre briefcase produced by Nikola Design & Technologies, Inc. is no exception. Designer Nikola Knezevic was able to put the material’s remarkable properties to good use, as well. anufacturing carbon fibre has to be done very carefully to avoid any defects. Nikola Knezevic wanted to show how detailed and precise that process can be. He also wanted to use the beauty of his product to highlight just what goes into to achieving such a strong, beautiful product. His design for the G3 briefcase combines the sense for detail that is characteristic of carbon fibre manufacturing with beautiful structural balance and strength. M Material and visual strength Nikola Knezevic’s aim was to create rounded forms that fit into and complement each other. The large carbon briefcase swings gently, but exudes the impression that energy is about to burst through every corner. The tension thus expressed is counterbalanced by the relatively sharp corners of the lock, covers and feet. The curve of the handle dives up and back down into the shell. The carbon shell and handle have the symmetrical, reflected motion in space of objects in harmony, an impression that is intensified by the high-gloss surface that mirrors the handle above. All of these elements come together to form a strong, firm, and compact object. The use of carbon fibre in combination with anodized black and white aluminium adds visual strength. The designer’s intention reveals its full potential through the form, lines, fittings, colours, and combination of materials. relationships between separate parts, and the overall shape did not exclude designing every single element, the fittings, and even the colour to fulfil functional needs completely. The feet are shaped and positioned to achieve maximum stability and support. The lock is cut into the carbon shell, with lock covers on the front and back sides for additional protection. The two halves of the carbon shell are identical, making production easier. The handle can be joined to only one of the halves, because its shape bends and twists as it rises from the carbon shell to position itself exactly over the central line of balance. The flowing, asymmetrical curve adds to the impression of unstable energy and stresses the organic nature of the whole object. Gum ribbon seals the interior when the case is closed. Company testing has demonstrated that the firm grip of the hinges, the lock, and the triplelayered ribbon together provide protection that complies with the IP66 standard. More information About Nikoladesign Nikola Knezevic founded Nikoladesign in 1998. Since then, the company has been involved in designing a wide range of products for electronics, lighting, tools, furniture and even glassware, for customers that include Hewlett Packard, Polaroid, Toshiba, B&W and Sony. All these years, the company has been inspired by the idea that beauty lies beneath the surface. This has served the company well, helping it win a number of prestigious awards such as the IF Award, the ID Annual Design Review Award, the Osaka International Design Award, and many more. fatigue resistance surpassing that of any other structural material. Lightweight, strong and durable carbon fibre is really the high-technology material for the 21st century. Nevertheless – even given all these outstanding technical characteristics, performance and suitability for the application – it was the specific beauty and energy of carbon fibre that overwhelmed the designer. “This was something that gave us courage and strength to try to breathe life into an everyday object. It was quite a challenge and the result of that magical process is here before you,” said Nikola Knezevic. More information: www.nikoladesign.com A designer in love with the material According to Nikola Knezevic, carbon fibre is a truly magnificent material with supreme properties. These include: low density, low coefficient of thermal expansion, low specific gravity, heat resistance, and chemical stability; selflubricating properties, specific tensile strength, specific modulus, high heat conductivity and impressive X-ray permeability; high electric conductivity, excellent EMI shielding properties, and Lines Paying particular attention to lines, 30 jec composites magazine / No48 May 2009
