BP/Amoco’s ThermalGraph DKD X milled pitch-based carbon fibre was proposed for testing. This material is graphitized at very high temperatures, which increases the thermal and electrical conductivity and modulus of the 28 fibres. Thus, in addition to increased heat conductivity, ThermalGraph DKD X also improved the mechanical stiffness and strength of the resulting composite. The properties of ThermalGraph DKD X are summarized in Table 4 [9]. Another advantage is that its properties are more uniform. Synthetic graphite to be used in this project is Conoco’s Thermocarb Specialty Graphite [9]. This material has high thermal conductivity and well-documented baseline performance records. Its properties are summarized in Table 6. Akzo Nobel’s Ketjenblack EC600 JD was chosen in this category in part because it substantially decreases the electrical resistivity of a composite at low loading levels. Another advantage of this material is that it has a highly branched structure, and therefore an extremely high surface interface area that is beneficial for conductive properties. Additionally, according to the literature, Ketjenblack EC600 JD performed best in a large panel of plastic composites filled by various commercially available carbon-black-based conductive Technological process A boot manufacturing technology using a high-speed pultrusion process was developed. In this process, polyester fibre is impregnated by polybutadiene, polyurethane resin and goes through a boot die profile.
