As Skipper Pete Bethune explained, “We did the refit at the Vulkan shipyard in Sagunto and it was a massive undertaking. Earthrace had already travelled around 70,000 nautical miles, visited 87 different marinas, and had more than 80,000 people on board during the pre-record tour and the first attempt. Without the incredible support of all these companies, the boat wouldn’t have been in any state to take on a global challenge to break the world speed record and we’re enormously grateful.” A 100% biodiesel trimaran powerboat. A carbon-neutral project The not-for-profit project is run as a carbon-neutral enterprise, making it one of the world’s most environmentally-friendly powerboats. The crew wanted to secure the world speed record in order to create greater awareness of biofuel produced from sustainable sources. The aim was to show that such biofuels can be part of the solution to counter environmental damage caused by fossil fuels, and to promote the need for everyone to lead sustainable lives. The goal of Earthrace was to set a new world record for a powerboat to circumnavigate the globe, running 100% renewable biodiesel fuel, and with a net zero carbon footprint. After breaking the world record in June, the boat will continue with a two-year promotional tour, visiting Europe, the Caribbean, the USA and Australia, before returning home to New Zealand. Whilst on tour, as during the record attempt itself, the crew will meet local people and talk about their experiences. One of the most important goals for the Earthrace team is to connect with people and encourage discussion about the need to get renewable fuels into our energy mix, while inspiring them to do something themselves to minimise their impact on the environment.
