KNOW-HOW Bonding g…/… INDAR: INnovative Dismantling Adhesives Research Examples of assemblies The mechanical tests shown here are tensile-shear tests that are compliant with the French NF EN 1465 standard. This type of test is used a lot in research on adhesive-bonded assemblies, because it provides valuable information about the breaking stress and deformation of the joint under that type of load. During the test, two substrates bonded together are held between jaws. The end of one substrate is gripped by a fixed jaw, and the opposite end of the other substrate, by a mobile jaw. The substrates are then pulled so as to apply tensile stress in the parallel direction. Figure 3 shows the type of specimens used for the tests. The diagram represents the “sandwich” structure used when the technology is incorporated into a primer. However, the additive can be directly added to the adhesive, without a primer. More information RESCOLL, a contract research company, conducts technical innovation studies on the industrial applications of polymers: composites, adhesives, resins, elastomers, varnish, etc. The company's customers are located throughout Europe. RESCOLL, a spin-off of the ENSCPB (Graduate School of Chemistry and Physics of Bordeaux), employs 25 engineers and technicians with a turnover of 2M€. that require this type of surface preparation. The process can be used with a Rescoll-developed primer, but it is also possible to directly reformulate an adhesive from an existing line. In this case, there is no change to the adhesive-bonding operation itself (there is no primer step added), as the choice of one or another action depends on the specifications for the target application. Figure 5 illustrates the effect of the process on a commercial epoxy adhesive used to bond two stripped and cleaned aluminium substrates. Fig.3: Tensile shear specimen. Different epoxy adhesive products have been tested in combination with various surface treatments (chromic-sulphuric bath, stripping, and sand blasting) to assess the versatility of the process on this type of adhesive. Fig.5: Modified commercial adhesive. Conclusion Adhesive bonding is an increasingly popular assembly technique, as illustrated by the automotive industry. Such interest can easily be explained by the many advantages of adhesive bonding compared to standard assembly methods. The use of adhesives makes it easy to assemble different materials, distribute stress evenly, eliminate many corrosion problems, achieve high production throughput. The technology presented in this paper removes a major technological obstacle in structural adhesive bonding, and that is irreversibility. For sustainable development concerns the use of removable structural adhesives is likely to become increasingly popular in many industrial sectors, mainly for weight-reduction purposes and, especially, to facilitate end-of-life recycling. Industrial partners have already expressed their interest in this technology, which is unquestionably a simple and effective solution. A number of studies have helped to demonstrate the relevance of the INDAR process, which has even been the recipient of several awards – including the 2006 engineering award (sustainable development category) from the Usine Nouvelle and the 2007 Pierre Potier Trophy from the French Industry Ministry. More information: www.rescoll.fr Contacts: maxime.olive@rescoll.fr jose.corta@rescoll.fr papon@enscpb.fr Fig.4: Primer on sand-blasted surface. Figure 4 shows the results obtained on sand-blasted aluminium materials for bond assembly. After sand-blasting with Corindon 125μm, the aluminium 6060T6 substrates exhibited an average roughness (Ra) of 2.5 μm. The substrates are coated with a primer developed by Rescoll; the adhesive used is a commercial product used widely in the aviation industry. Applying the primer involves the following steps: - cleaning the substrates with methyl ethyl ketone before and after sand blasting; - mixing the two primer components (epoxy base); - coating the substrates with the primer with a brush; - curing for 24 hours at ambient temperature, or for one hour at 65°C; - applying the adhesive in accordance with supplier instructions. This method demonstrates that the technology is effective even on rough substrates, opening up attractive prospects in all applications JEC Composites Magazine / No40 May 2008
