KNOW-HOW Bonding INDAR: INnovative Dismantling Adhesives Research Rescoll Technological Centre’s patented INDAR process is designed to debond structural adhesive joints on command, making disassembly of adhesive-bonded parts technically and economically feasible and changing the industrial outlook on structural adhesives. Focus Issues and context As an example, 66 million adhesive-bonded windscreens are replaced each year worldwide. And in Europe alone, nine million end-of-life vehicles generate more than two million metric tons of non-metal waste (glass, plastics, composites). The use of removable adhesives would help to considerably decrease the environmental impact of future vehicles, in compliance with European directives. The wide choice of available adhesives also opens up a choice of different activation temperatures, the better to meet specifications for individual applications. Once the compounds have been added, the new formulations all have identical properties in terms of storage and processing. Adding these molecules to the adhesives or the primers does not alter the mechanical, adhesive and cohesive properties of the glue deposits or glue joints, up to the activation temperature. The breaking stress, as measured under tensile-shear stress on specimens like the ones presented below, can fall to under 0.1 MPa from an original value that was 100-200 times as much, making damage-free disassembly impossible initially. Obtaining clean post-disassembly surfaces (figure 2) is a major innovation. The state-of-the-art literature does mention other debonding technologies, but the gases generated during the activation of the compound cause the glue joint to explode in every case. This produces soiled substrates that are difficult to clean during maintenance, unlike the INDAR process, where the specific choice and implementation of the additives produces clean post-activation surfaces. 1- JOSÉ ALCORTA, MANAGER, 2- MAXIME OLIVE, R&D ENGINEER, RESCOLL 3- ERIC PAPON, PROFESSOR, LCPO, UMR 5629 he results presented in this paper concern epoxy matrices, although a number of other substrate/adhesive combinations were also tested. Innovative Dismantling Adhesives Research technology, or INDAR, is quite versatile. It can be used with many different combinations of a broad range of structural adhesives (including epoxies, especially aerospace grades, UV-cure adhesives, polyurethane or silicone glues, and more), substrates (such as steel, glass, or aluminium), and surface treatments (including chromicsulphuric bath, sand blasting, wire-brushing, and solvent cleaning), at different activation temperatures. T General operating principle The INDAR process involves formulating new adhesives and primers or reformulating commercial adhesives, to allow them to be easily removed at ambient temperature following heat activation. The choice of additive in the technological case presented here is based on certain very specific properties that will allow the additive to migrate to the interface during activation to generate local stresses. The result is clean and easily reusable surfaces following disassembly. This method comprises two principal phases: 1) migration of the active components to the joint/substrate interface and 2) splitting of the interface under the action of gases generated by the additives ( figure 1).
