KNOW-HOW Process Resin flow monitoring in the composite infusion process Monitoring of liquid resin flow and cure behaviour helps cure cycle optimisation and insure in situ quality control without interfering with processing. More information STEPHAN COSTANTINO, HUNTSMAN ADVANCED MATERIALS FABIEN CARA, MAPE ENGINEERING SWITZERLAND SA I nfusion is considered a promising technology for large part processing thanks to its low-cost tooling, good working conditions in terms of both environment and health, and overall performance. For aerospace applications, process monitoring is required to ensure the robustness and reproducibility of infusion. For this purpose, direct monitoring is a key part-manufacturing control solution. Flow fronts are usually visible thanks to layer transparency, but there are many cases where the resin is not visible, for example when silicone membranes or metallic caul plates are used, or when infusion is performed in an oven or autoclave. In this paper, MAPE Engineering and Huntsman Advanced Materials present two cases, both describing extreme existing infusion conditions: (1) high-temperature infusion for composite parts in the aerospace industry, (2) ambient isothermal resin infusion for tooling applications. MAPE Engineering Switzerland SA designs industrial control solutions based on thermal monitoring (Thermoflux technology) and has developed a new sensing system dedicated to infusion processes. The infusion sensor is simply placed on the top of the vacuum bags (outside the vacuum area) to monitor changes in the thermal properties beneath these. The sensor delivers different types of data, including information on flow front detection, flow rate changes and cure monitoring. Its ease of use makes this technology suitable for research, development and production phases. The same quality control becomes possible for all of the parts produced, with full traceability of the infusion conditions, thermal cycle, and local cure behaviour. Huntsman Advanced Materials is a global manufacturer and marketer of differentiated chemicals. Huntsman’s epoxy-based resin systems for composite tools and parts are specially developed for the infusion process and offer outstanding temperature resistance, low viscosity at ambient temperature, very good surface finish and high Huntsman is a global manufacturer and marketer of differentiated chemicals. Its operating companies manufacture products for a variety of global industries, including chemicals, plastics, automotive, aviation, textiles, footwear, paints and coatings, construction, technology, agriculture, health care, detergents, personal care, furniture, appliances and packaging. Originally known for pioneering innovations in packaging and, later, for rapid and integrated growth in petrochemicals, Huntsman today has 13,000 employees and operates from multiple locations worldwide. The company had 2007 revenues of approximately $10 billion. dimensional stability. Huntsman has an ongoing research programme to develop aerospace-quality resin systems for composite applications. Description of resin infusion Resin infusion requires very little equipment - basically a dry preform layered onto a shape (tool) and a vacuum pump (figure 1). Resin is simply sucked through the preform under the effect of atmospheric pressure and capillary forces. Peel plies and suitable draining media can also be used to achieve fast filling rates and high-quality final parts. Using appropriate tool treatment and release agents will also guarantee easy demoulding and good surface finish. This configuration produces parts with a potential class A surface straight out of the mould and typically 57% carbon fibre by volume.
